ORONTO (AP) - The Canadian government on Thursday denied refugee status to former U.S. Army paratrooper Jeremy Hinzman, a major blow to a handful of U.S. military deserters who have fled to Canada rather than fight in Iraq or Afghanistan.
The decision could affect at least eight - and possibly dozens more - American soldiers seeking refuge in Canada, yet help improve strained relations between Washington and Ottawa.

If he's a liberal, send him to Cuba to live under a dictator they so admire.
I was thinking North Korea, myself. ;-)
Why did he join the military anyway? Can't be for the hairstyle.
Good for Canada!
So will Canada now do the right thing and hand him over to US military so he can face his courts martial.
I saw an interview with a Canadian expert on refugee status and he predicted this would be denied. He made a big deal out of the distinction between someone who had volunteered for the military and then deserted versus the draftee who had no choice.
HooHah!
"Somewhere, somehow,
"Somebody must have kicked you around some.
"Tell me why you wanna lay there and revel in your abandon.
"It don't make no difference to me, baby,
"Everybody's got to fight to be free,
"You see you don't have to live like a refugee..."
Why didn't he just 'out' himself like all the other people who don't want to fight?
...wishing we could reinstate that policy
Didn't no recruiter never tell me part of the job description 'round here is to fight no battles.
U.S. military deserters belong in Federal prison.
I think that he likes to play dress-up, but wasn't he ever curious why they taught him how to shoot a rifle if he was not preparing for combat?
He actually said that he joined in Nov. 2000 for the GI Bill.
Good point. I can understand a lot of peple running from conscription but if you sign up then you have to stand by your committments or at least ask to transfer to medical suppport or something non-violent.
Roll his butt up and into the brig with him!
Or say you're a homo and get the boot out...
