Splenda Marketing

A bitter battle brews

Splenda's advertising leaves competitors with a bad taste

By Harold Brubaker

Inquirer Staff Writer

Depending on whom you ask, the remarkable success of Splenda is either the result of brilliant marketing, or the work of deceptive advertising.

After just five years on supermarket shelves, the artificial sweetener - whose advertising slogan is "made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar" - has found its way into 20 percent of U.S. households and takes in 50 percent of the money spent on sugar substitutes.

At least one competitor simply applauds McNeil Nutritionals L.L.C. of Fort Washington, the company that sells Splenda.

"I think Splenda has done an excellent job of marketing," said John W. Childs, president of J.W. Childs Associates L.P., a Boston-based private equity firm that owns NutraSweet Co., the largest producer of the artificial sweetener aspartame. "I tip my hat to them."

But Merisant Co., the Chicago company that produces Equal, an aspartame-based sweetener, is not nearly so kind. Along with a bevy of sugar producers and several individuals, it has sued McNeil to force it to stop associating its product so closely with sugar. McNeil has sued back. The suits are pending.

"Our contention... is that McNeil has made false claims in its advertising and packaging of Splenda," said Jeff Leshay, an outside spokesman for Merisant.

The debate does not center on whether Splenda is made from sugar. It is.

Its intensely sweetening ingredient is sucralose, which is made in a five-step process in which sucrose - the sugar that comes from sugar beets and cane sugar - reacts with chlorine.

I don't know why people are all over Splenda. If it tasted like crap, people wouldn't buy it. Frankly, it is the only artificial sweetener that I can tolerate. I don't care if it's made from sugar or not; immaterial to me. All I know is that I like the taste of it, and use it instead of sugar so that I'll have some assistance in losing weight and reducing my triglyceride level.

Splenda is popular mostly because it is permitted in low-carb diets.

Splenda is acceptable on low-carb and Atkins' diets. Quite frankly, DietRite is the only soda manufacturer who uses Splenda instead of sugar or sugar substitutes in their drinks....and they taste fantastic!

I was drinking some zero-calorie flavored carbonated water that I thought was really great until I read the fine print and found out I was consuming sucralose.

I stopped immediately.

Sucralose is a halogenated hydrocarbon.

There are no natural halogenated hydrocarbons in your body.

There are lots of them in insecticides, however.

The reason Splenda is so popular is because Nutrasweet is so terrible. If you go to the health nut web sites, they have bad things to say about Splenda, just like everything else they consider artificial but admit that it is much better for you than nutrasweet.

Yes. Love Diet Rite products. They taste good and I don't get addicted to them like I do with Diet Pepsi and Coke.

In his last interview on Larry King, Dr. Atkins said that Splenda was the best sugar substitute on the market.

People like Splenda because it does not do weird things to your blood sugar and metabolism but many suspect (but * have * not * proved ) that asparteme turns on fat storing like sugar/glucose does. Why nutrisweet addicts don't lose weight as much as they seemingly should. Also splenda bakes! Nicely too.

Isn't Coke supposed to come out soon with a new soda made with Splenda? I can't wait. I'm a diabetic and I don't particularly care for those other artificial sweetners. I love Splenda!

Not quite. Diet Big Red, (Big Red is big in Texas) also uses it, as does Walgreen's house brand of diet cola. DietRiet is caffenine free, but the other two are not. Diet RC, made by the same folks as DietRite, also uses Splenda but has caffine.

Does it really back nicely? I'm going to start baking with Splenda - the other artificial sweetners make my brain feel funny ;-)

That's because they have no caffine. Sometimes you might want the caffine, in which case try Diet RC or Diet Big Red.
