Steele vs Mfume may be the best race of the 2006 election.

I would LOVE to see Michael Steele get into this race. He might get the type of national exposure necessary to promote the conservative message in black communities. He is someone we can all support!

Steele would be far superior to Keyes, who is political roadkill.

Yes! IMO, he's the only Maryland Republican available who can win this race.

Yeah, back on the earlier threads when the usual cast of idiots was suggesting Keyes I'd forgotten he'd already run for Senate in MD twice and got annihilated both times; in 1988 he managed to lose 62% to 38%, in a year when Maryland actually went for Bush over Dukakis.

He was FABULOUS at the RNC convention, IIRC.

While I disagree with Steele on the death penalty, he has that rare ability to at least understand the issue and not act like an elitist about it.

That said, he is far superior to Keyes, he is well polished, makes a strong conservative case, and has worked hard and agressively in outreach in the inner cities and with communities while not hitting the race card and alienating whites or treating them like they are the devil.

If its Steele vs Mfume, it will be fun watching the media twist itself into knots and fits with race.

Even if Steele were to lose, the fact that the dems would have to spend money in MARYLAND of all places to hold onto a seat and spend resources here, and time, make it that much easier to flip another couple of blue dems in red states, not to mention light blue state dems.

The more the dems have to stretch themselves on the defence, the more the republicans can go on the offence.

I don't know. Very liberal state. Two black candidates head to head. You have to give the odds to the Democrat but anything can happen. Mfume can screw up, he can be over confident, stranger things have happened.

IMO, Keyes really blew it big time when he moved to Illinois to run for Senate. That was a stupid move, & why he ignores running for the House makes no sense to me. Does he consider the House of Representatives to be below his level or something?

Steele studied to be a priest for a time and is a very devout Catholic; official teaching of the church is against the death penalty.

And he is also pro-life and consistant about it. Its why I bare him no grudge, I just disagree, but respect his viewpoint, and he has made clear he respects others viewpoints.

I like the fact that is social conservatism is genuine, its consistance, and its not "menu style spirituality" where you pick and choose what parts of the religion you will follow and which ones you won't.

He's a good man, and he will hopefully, make a fine senator.
