Even the Supreme Court recognized there are limits to federal authority, for once.

Yea, when it comes to killing someone who is helpless and innocent, then the states can do what they want.

When they want to ban killing (anti-abortion) then the Supreme Court steps in.

Sounds like the Supreme Court is only concerned with getting people killed (except ofcourse if you are a convicted murderer, then we cannot let anything happen to you, the World might think we are uncivilized)

I think they are hoping she dies, so it will not give them anymore headaches.

If she were a convicted murderer, she would have all the protection in the world.

Thanks Jenny. I just want to point out that many freepers have known all of this for a long time. That is what many of us have been talking about here.

The very fact that the law allows a living, breathing human being to be put to death, one who has committed no crime for which she is being punished, is in and of itself proof of catastrophic error in the laws that must be remediated.

The DemocRATs are full of surprises!

They have finally picked out Hill No. 2008 or Mt. Schaivo to die on.

Unfortunately some RepublicRATs are scrambled to join their leftist allies, while many DemocRATs, one being Pelousi, decided they'd better abstain.

What is the status of the case now? After the judge receives the paper work, how long does he have to do something?

Personally I am overjoyed that President Bush signed the document. I watched the Larry King interview from 2003 with this cad of a husband. It's not like they had this long and enduring marriage. What an awful man he is that he would choose death for Terri rather than give custody over to the parents, brother and sister who desperately want her kept alive. Taking the feeding tube away from her is murder.
How he can say "shame on" the people who love her most is just disgusting. He professing to loving her so much yet he disrespects her 1) choosing death 2) common law wife
3) illegimate children 4) obnoxious and vile treatment of the parents who brought her into this world and who SHE loves dearly.
Damn husband is a murderer hiding behind legal schmegal BS
Shame on HIM. What a heartless bastard.

Flaglady47 sure is -- she posted to someone that had signed up two days after she did and they posted back her exact spam she was putting on -- cracked up laughing at anyone thinking that we would believe her postings.

This whole weekend has been very interesting on here -- must admit some Freepers shocked me but it was so heartwarming to see so many Freepers on the thread last night when the House was debating life or death for this woman. Proud to be a member of the Party of Life -- if I had been a Dem, I would have gone this morning and reregistered as a Republican. Never saw the line more clearly drawn then last night including their Minority Whip.

Yes they can.

On what basis?

The private bills passed by Congress for individual relief are requested by the petitioners themselves. In this case the individual for whom the relief was provided did not request it. Nor did her guardian. There are many legal issues here, one of which is whether the Schindlers have the legal standing to request such relief.

The current rules for the 109th Session only forbid these types of private bills:

4. A private bill or private resolution (including an omnibus claim or pension bill), or amendment thereto, may not be received or considered in the House if it authorizes or directs_

(a) the payment of money for property damages, for personal injuries or death for which suit may be instituted under the Tort Claims Procedure provided in title 28, United States Code, or for a pension (other than to carry out a provision of law or treaty stipulation);

(b) the construction of a bridge across a navigable stream; or

(c) the correction of a military or naval record.

There are numerous instances where private bills have been introduced that were not for the relief of even an individual. An example that took all of five minutes to find with a very simple Google search:

To clear certain impediments to the licensing of a vessel for employment in the coastwise trade and fisheries of the United States. (Introduced in House)
HR 3299 IH

103d CONGRESS

1st Session

H. R. 3299

To clear certain impediments to the licensing of a vessel for employment in the coastwise trade and fisheries of the United States.

IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

October 15, 1993

Mr. GILCHREST introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries

A BILL

To clear certain impediments to the licensing of a vessel for employment in the coastwise trade and fisheries of the United States.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That, notwithstanding sections 12105, 12106, 12107, and 12108 of title 46, United States Code, and section 27 of the Merchant Marine Act, 1920 (46 App. U.S.C. 883), as applicable on the date of this Act, the Secretary of the Department in which the Coast Guard is operating may issue a certificate of documentation for the following vessels:

    (1) VIXEN (United States official number 658823).

    (2) LADY CHARL II (United States official number 541399).

    (3) LINETTE (United States official number 654318).

As to the Schiavo case, the private bill introduced was for relief of the parents: "Section 1. RELIEF OF THE PARENTS OF THERESA MARIE SCHIAVO".

One purpose of the bill, as it clearly says, is to grant standing to the parents: "SEC. 2. PROCEDURE. Any parent of Theresa Marie Schiavo shall have standing to bring a suit under this Act. "

He can dye it like Reagan did. Besides, I hear the Left has a higher regard for men with white hair, like Sheets Byrd and Ted Kennedy.

Besides, white hair might make him look more sophisiticated, and the Europeans would just love that. That might even enable him to recruit Chirac, Schroeder and Putin into his freedom crusade.

The only male leader with white hair who lacks high international regard is Ariel Sharon. That's probably because his last name is the first name of many women.(Sarcasm off.)

My pastor got up yesterday and praised God for a president like Mr. Bush who believes in LIFE! We're fortunate that Kerry didn't get in.

My husband had to be online last night for his work and it was driving me nuts, having been forced to be FR-free. I'm sure the debate was fascinating.

And yes, I agree, I am so proud to be a member of the party of Life.

At least Kevorkian's method of murder was quick and didn't take two weeks to a month to finish the job.
