Sorry about your family's experience. You are right about slippery slope. This denial of food and water is an easy way for doctors, owners of hospices, etc. to get "rid" of patients without actually killing them by injection. I heard a geriatric specialist actually admit that he does this in his practice cause if he injected patients, he could be accused of murder while starvation is just allowing them to die.

There are private bills passed by Congress all the time that provide relief for a named individual and these are non-controversial. I would surprised if the courts found a bill unconstitutional that simply allowed the petitioner to bring a case before them. It does not interfere with the separation of powers in any way or grant any special treatment to Terri Schiavo. The bill simply grants her and her parents the same rights all other Americans take for granted. I don't see why any one, least of all a federal judge, would have a problem with it.

Nor is it an ex-post facto law. It neither imposes punishment nor changes any procedure that did not exist before. As a private bill, it ought to have passed the House by a voice vote. Why the Democrats insisted on a roll call vote is one of those things we'll never understand.

I think some people get a little too tightly focused. It's like when someone is LOOKING for a fight/argument. Even if you say "Hey I don't wanna argue" they'll say "What was THAT supposed to mean?!"

I guess these people thought those "W Stands For Women" stickers meant that Bush's middle name was "Women".

This long, drawn out battle between Schiavo and the Schindlers is a case study in judicial breakdown. Some weakness in the process has been exploited:

When something as obvious as the right to l can be threatened on the basis of hearsay, and with complete and deliberate magisterial ignorance of medical reports like this one, which might give a CLUE as to how Terri ended up in her sorry plight. Multiple fractures, anyone?

It doesn't interfere with any arrangement that currently exists for the care of Terri Schiavo in Florida. All it does is allow Terri's parents to petition a federal court to hear her case. I expect it'll be some years before there's a final resolution.

There's been a more Libertarian branch of the Republican party for years. Just as there is a populist wing, a Rockefeller Republican wing, a pro-life wing, etc. etc. etc. Remember, the big tent.
