Einstein's special theory of relativity predicts that nothing can exceed the speed of light. But special relativity applies when spacetime is flat. When spacetime is curved, the theory applies only "locally"--that is, over regions of spacetime small enough to be considered flat. Consider the analogy of a plane that is tangent to a sphere. The flat geometry of the plane is a good approximation to the geometry of the sphere when the size of the plane is very small compared to the sphere's radius of curvature.

Yes, but it may be necessary to ship out the nay-sayers so we can go about our explorations unhindered. :)

Besides, they're an embarassment to our species.

God also created us, but we apparently have to work a little harder at achieving it.

> Goedel proved that we can travel anywhere in time

I did not know this. Can you elaborate or point to a web reference?

But if we're traveling faster than light at night and turn out headlights on, what happens?

the side effect of the research proofed that the exact speed of light is not a constant and can change given the enviroment it is in

We've known for quite some time that light slows down while traveling through various media. That's the reason for refraction in water or glass, for example.

I haven't heard of anything that increases light's speed.

There is a new book, Incompleteness: The Proof and Paradox of Kurt Godel -- by Rebecca Goldstein. About $15. Biographical with philosophy, written by a philosopher. Good writer, too.

But we need spice to bend space, have we found it yet?

Pioneer is leaving the solar system at a faster-than-expected rate. One speculation is that light may be faster than established out there, making interstellar travel that much easier.

No, we're still looking at it wrong. If another fearsome threesome like Goedel, Einstein, and Heisenberg ever come into our midst again, maybe they'll be able to furnish us with the right spectacles like Rowdy Roddy.

Well, I can give you something right now that travels much much faster than light, in fact it appears to have infinite speed; Gravity.

The planets react to the instantaneous position of other planets even though the time for light to travel between them may be hours, days, weeks or months. If there was a lag in the reaction because of the light speed, many planet orbits would fly apart in spirals. Funny, nobody make a fuss about this because it has always been this way.

Goedel proved that we can travel anywhere in time, and that means time is an illusion. We're just not looking at it right."

A few 'shrooms can usually help with that.

We have seen some people try that. They don't seem to go anywhere and they are still there when they recover from the toxicity. If they recover.

No, flat spacetime speed of light is the issue here.

Not about subjecting it through gasses.

A fork travels through a chocolate cake faster than the speed of light. Think about it.

Not necessarily, however, there is an experiment being conducted in space at this very moment that should be able answer this conclusively within a year or so.
