5-Year-Old Arrested For Candy Outburst At School
POSTED: 12:52 pm EST March 18, 2005
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Florida school officials are apologizing for the arrest of a 5-year-old, whose tantrum landed her in the back of a police cruiser.
Officials said the girl threw books and boxes, kicked a teacher in the shins, smashed a candy dish, hit an assistant principal in the stomach and drew on the walls. She was upset when a teacher took away jelly beans she was counting in a math exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary School.
Minutes later, she was under arrest for battery. The 40-pound girl's hands were bound with plasic ties and her ankles in handcuffs.
A school superintendent said campus police should have been called. He said school officials "never want to have 5-year-old children arrested."
No charges were filed and the girl went home with her mother, who said her daughter will not return. In her words, "They set my baby up."

I can think of several occasions when I have had to hold a five year old who was having an out of control tantrum. The child, having the tantrum, would kick, scream, hit, bite, and throw objects like desks and chairs. They were a danger to myself and the other children. All of them occurring while I worked in day care.
Only the fact that I was twice their size allowed me to control them. How I would have loved calling the cops and putting those children in restraints. Such children should be taken out of school and their mothers forced to take care of them.

Oh, I LOVE that movie! It was such a scandal in it's day, wasn't it? (The Bad Seed) Great acting all around.
Did you know they added the "curtain call" at the end of the movie with the Mom spanking the child to remind people that it was "just a play?" LOL! What a hoot!

Yes, that part is shown when the movie is on TCM.

Could not anyone have just grabbed the Kid by the scruff of the neck, and torn her little butt up? Nothing serious, just to the point of grabbing her attention.
Watch for this Kid on down the line, she will be in the news again, and it will not be due to positive contributions to society.
No Hissy fit should go unpunished! Yes, I spanked My Kid, and every so often She thanks Me for it.

Arresting the child was ridiculous. However, a quick spank on the bottom might have solved the 'tantrum' issue. Then the teacher would have been arrested!

Hey, don't forget all the social services scandals. The girl that SS thought was in foster care, but someone claiming to be from SS had taken her from her foster home. She has never been seen/heard from again.
And then don't forget the time SS hassled parents for having an obese child, while at the same time there were a bunch of kids being locked up and abused in a single room by their foster parents.
I know, I know. There's so much going on in FL, who can keep track of it all...

A good thorough pistol-whipping would have settled her down.Nahhh... But an electric cattle prod...

These school administrators are such idiots. They can not figure out how to discipline a 5-year-old without wasting the time of the police?
How much are these people paid?

And don't forget, "misplacing" a child in foster care. Did they EVER find that kid, by the way?

Yet another case of rules-based stupidity. We expect these teachers to teach when they refuse or unable to discipline children and call in the police. Incredible.
