ST. LOUIS (AP) Mark McGwire was so popular in St. Louis after his 70-homer season in 1998 that a stretch of Interstate 70 was named after him.
Now, a St. Louis congressman who was part of the House Government Reform Committee says McGwire's name should be removed from the highway over his refusal to say if he used performance enhancers.
William Lacy Clay says he was disappointed in McGwire's testimony yesterday. He says baseball fans want to know if McGwire was using steroids when he set the home run record.
In 1999, a five-mile stretch of I-70 through St. Louis was named "Mark McGwire Highway."
The chairman of the state Senate Transportation Committee says McGwire's name will remain, as far as he's concerned. Senator Jon Dolan says McGwire was and is a hero to Cardinals fans.

No federal funds are given to MLB, but they enjoy exemption from anti-trust laws. This gives the gov't the right to get into their business.
The real question is, if laws were broken, why aren't they being investigated by law enforcement/D.A. types?

You've been living in that "red" state of Oklahoma too long. How do you know you're even smart enough to participate in such intellectual discussions as these? Hmmmm?

All those times I've driven down that five-mile stretch of highway and been reminded that a baseball might crash through the windshield at any moment. That honorary sign is a safety hazard. It plumb makes me nervous. Put a "DRUG FREE ZONE" sign there instead.

I stand corrected! I knew it was SOMETHING that gave the government the "right" to do this. Good points too, 4thInfVet! = )

After removing his name from the highway, the Congress should pass a law to take back the Oscars of every actor who won one while under the influence of drugs or alcohol...well, that would be just about everyone. No one should get an Oscar if they used drug-induced emotions. Dammit! It's such a bad example for the kids.

Deep Breath.... We've got 15,000,000 frickin' illegal aliens in this frickin' country and these frickin' @$$ wads in Congress who don't have one frickin' set of frickin' brains between the sorry @$$ lot of these frickin' morons are wasting the frickin' nations time on a group of maybe 200 frickin' dumb@$$ jocks in MLB who may have taken frickin' steroids. These b@st@rds should be kicked in the frickin' nuts and thrown out of office....!Amen, brother...not to mention Iran buildin' nukes, NK buildin' nukes, etc.
But this baseball thing is REALLY important.
I guess it's not a problem in the NFL, NBA, NHL, etc.
These sanctimonious sloths called politicians really frost me.

Isn't there any REAL legislation to take care of there? Sheesh! No, but there are payroll budgets to squander. If the parasites have to refund it to taxpayers, we might get used to it.

The asterisk should be hugely muscular with a giant head and deteriorating internal organs....Kinda like pro wrestlers. Man, they (along with pro football players) die off young...and, in disproportionately large numbers.

How do you know you're on "Cynthia McKinney" highway? All the cars travel in the left lane, and when drivers stop along the side of the highway to relieve themselves, they point the stream towards the road.

Since when did baseball become a government controlled sport?I would rather see these clowns working on ways to protect our border instead of grandstanding over steroids. They must be looking for a way to tap into the revenue of professional sports to help fund their drunken spending habits.
