Congressman: Take McGwire's Name Off Highway
CBS 2 Chicago ^ | March 18, 2005 | AP

Posted on 03/18/2005 6:54:10 PM PST by Land_of_Lincoln_John

ST. LOUIS (AP) Mark McGwire was so popular in St. Louis after his 70-homer season in 1998 that a stretch of Interstate 70 was named after him.

Now, a St. Louis congressman who was part of the House Government Reform Committee says McGwire's name should be removed from the highway over his refusal to say if he used performance enhancers.

William Lacy Clay says he was disappointed in McGwire's testimony yesterday. He says baseball fans want to know if McGwire was using steroids when he set the home run record.

In 1999, a five-mile stretch of I-70 through St. Louis was named "Mark McGwire Highway."

The chairman of the state Senate Transportation Committee says McGwire's name will remain, as far as he's concerned. Senator Jon Dolan says McGwire was and is a hero to Cardinals fans.

Wasn't there, and I'm not making this up, a Senator Bilbo in Mississippi like that, too.

This whole hearing is a sham if Barry Bonds isn't there.

What a joke.

I remember reading of Bilbo, not Baggins, and he was, like Barnett "Old South" Senators.

In college I drove down to New Orleans on the Ross Barnett highway, Ross Barnett Bridge, Ross Barnett Lake, etc.

Meantime, a woman starves to death in Florida. Get a life, Clay.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think the reason why legislation can hold these men accountable is because federal funds are given to baseball. HOWEVER, I totally agree that there are many more important things for our elected officials to be doing.

I had a different take on Mark's testimony. I thought he was the only smart one in the bunch for not putting himself in a position to commit perjury. I also thought that although it is pretty obvious he is guilty and his integrity has been damaged, it is obvious he realizes his mistake (by very emotional testimony) and that he is concerned with protecting those closest to him. He doesn't deny that steroids is a problem in baseball. He realizes that what's done is done and instead of focusing on what is behind, lets focus on what is ahead. I also believe that if Mark is found guilty of using steroids, his name should be removed from the record books or have an * by his name. It is something he did himself and although he can be forgiven, it is a consequence that he risked in choosing to cheat.

Bonds couldn't be there because he is the subject of an ongoing investigation (BALCO). On the other hand, some say MLB cajoled some of these Congressmen into denying Canseco immunity. If he was granted immunity it would have been a very different hearing. In that regard it was most definitely turned into a cartoon with daffy Henry Waxman playing the part of a yelling puppet.

Which reminds me, it would be nice if those wild and crazy guys who created Team America could come up with another puppet movie about this whole sordid mess to maybe convince kids of how stupid health-wise and uncool doping is.

This is why people used to wait until you were gone.

That way, you couldn't disappoint somebody.

Right on post 28!! Mc was older when he took them, it takes longer for an older body to heal from use and injury
and he, virtually single handedly, filled the stadiums back up after the whiney, er excuse me, baseball strike. Sosa and Griffey jr. helped as well.
Wherever Mc went tickets were SOLD! and thats the bottom line. He was old enough to know what he was doing, waaaaay past high school and college. Move along please, we're walking, we're walking...
Mc was never liked by the media here because he wouldn't give them the time of day. Oh yeah, add to that a successful white Mc. Of course Clay doesn't like him.

Stop the presses! MLB guys who have stretches of highway dedicated to them are less important? I think not!

I forgot about the highway part.
