Andover woman nabbed in snowball rage incident
Boston Herald ^ | March 18, 2005 | Franci Richardson

An irate Andover housewife was freed without bail on assault charges after a case of snowball rage allegedly prompted her to chase down some kids with a tire iron and a can of pepper spray.

Among the victims was a high school student who reportedly was an innocent bystander who just asked her to move her car.

``(Maria) Needs told him to say one more thing and he would see what would happen and she was waving the metal bar at him,'' read a police report. ``(He) said something sarcastic and at this time, Mrs. Needs sprayed him with pepper spray right in the eye.''

Needs, 48, was released on her own recognizance yesterday from Lawrence District Court after she was charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and illegal possession of pepper spray.

Three witnesses told police kids outside of Andover High School threw snowballs at her Honda SUV. After Needs chased one of the kids with a tire iron through the high school parking lot, another student who was not involved in the snowball throwing asked her to move her car so he could get to work on time.

``Needs refused and said that she had more important things to do,'' according to the police report.

Needs refused comment at her home yesterday through a man who identified himself as her husband.

Youre kidding right? Pepper spray isnt really illegal in Boston is it?

This lady need her tension adjusted. Her upper tension is a mite too tight for a good stitch.

Well, she did warn him before spraying. He's lucky she didn't take advantage of his blinded state and wear him out with the tire iron

I'm not kidding, but of all the CCW's, the Class IV is pretty easy to get.

"...but to him she was nothing but a crazy lady who was blocking his car."

And to her, he was another disrespectful, a-hole kid. A pretty stupid one at that. What kind of kid is going to watch a lady chase a group of kids with a tire-iron and then tell her to move her car? And then, after she warns him to stand down, he decides he's going to throw in one last a-hole comment?

Sounds like a real innocent boyscout to me! Yeah right....

This may be a stupid question, but the article said illegal possession of pepper spray?

This incident took place in Massachusetts. It's probably a good assumption that possession of anything other than a condom in Massachusetts is illegal unless there is a specific law stating otherwise.

One of the most memorable days of my youth occured when we threw a plastic easter egg filled with water at a utility company truck.
The dude stopped and devoted about two hours of his time to trying to nab us.
It was really fun.

Asked to comment on the incident, Sarah Brady said she would act quickly to call on Mssr.s Kennedy and Kerry to introduce legislation to control snowballs in MA.

One day I was out taking a walk in my neighborhood when I heard this commotion...a bunch of teenage boys were skateboarding down the street and they were yelling at his older lady to "move her f*ing car" which was parked in front of her house on the side of the road. Oh my God, all of the sudden the lady starts chasing the boys down the street, through a parking lot, waving her arms trying to hit them..They were all laughing at her and calling her a crazy old b...I was hoping she'd catch up and wail them over the head with a stick...little bastards! But I gotta say, it was one of the funniest sights I've seen in my life!

So, this kid should be held to a higher standard of maturity than the adult. When did it become acceptable to attack children on a school grounds.

illegal possession of pepper spray

Criminalization of weapons, deadly as well as non-lethal, is common in totalitarian states, like the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts, Chicago, etc.

When I was a kid, if you cheesed off the wrong grownup you could get in trouble, maybe even knocked around a little.

Now, if you cheese off the wrong grownup, the grownup gets arrested.

This is not progress.

So the guy who just wanted her to move her improperly parked car got what was coming to him, I guess?

We're not talking about a higher standard. We're talking about respect and decency. Something this kid, like so many others are sorely lacking.

If some nut was blocking my car, I'd be inclined to be sarcastic.
