In perhaps one of the longest policy battles ever, an amendment introduced by Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) to strike the provision from the Appropriations Bill authorizing drilling in a small section of ANWR passed despite the defection of seven Republicans: Senators Chafee, Coleman, Collins, DeWine, McCain, Smith, and Snowe.
Although the battle for drilling in ANWR is far from over, since the House bill doesn't have the same provision and, as such, a conference to reconcile the two bills followed by a second vote will take place, does this vote increase or decrease the influence of RINOs?
Question: On the Cantwell Amendment to strike section 201(a)(4) relative to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Why did the Democrats from Hawaii voted for it? Doesn't sound like something they are interested in.
yeah, I didn't understand that either.
I also like how 49 other states are trying to "protect" (aka, hinder growth of) Alaska from drilling on itself. what does a hippie in New England care about the ANWR. i was watching something on FOX the other day, and the moderator asked the Dim how many times he's visited the ANWR. "None," he replied, followed with a "and how many times have YOU been there?" Moderator "Twice, actually." It was hilarious.
Point is, we have the support of the two senators FROM Alaska. Yeah, they happen to be Republicans, but the majority of ALASKANS support drilling too. So why is there even a debate?
Yeah, but Arlen Specter voted for drilling in a tiny portion of ANWR.
The bigger question is should the US govt be allowed to confiscate property from a state and then stop the state from developing it. Teddy Roosevelt started the practice to allow monopolies of his coal-mining buddies, and it needs to end.
Well, Coleman made it clear when he was running that he opposed drilling in ANWR so his vote doesn't come as a real surprise. At least he was honest and didn't change his position after being elected.
McCain voted against it? What a surprise.
Guess who I won't be supporting in 2008...
It all can be solved by something simple. Something that the founding fathers (IMHO) wanted from the day that they joined the original 13 into a Republic. Each State has say over what and what not to do with the land in it's borders. That means that if Alaska wants to drill for oil in the ANWR, then it is Alaska's choice. If NM and AZ want to put a big wall on the Mexican border, it should be up to THOSE STATES. The solution is simple, give the states back the power that they once had in the begining, and use the Federal government to keep them safe.
Shocking. For once my Senators make me proud.
Theres been a few reason cited, mostly that the senators from Alaska and Hawaii have a gentlemens agreement to help each other out, i.e. pork, and other stuff that is wanted by the state.
But alot of libs think that the GOP may have used a threat of a baseclosing in Hawaii or with holding of some kind of pork to get them to play ball.
I'd also like to know, but I want give a thanks to Mrs Landrieu as well. I don't know where she stands on judges but Sen Landrieu has been helpful lately.
Thank You MRS LANDRIEU!!!
It makes sense. Hawaii and Alaska have very little say by themseves in the House and Senate, and since they are not a part of CONUS, they decided to stick together to (try) to make sure that states like California and NY don't run them down. It is the little guys looking out for each other.
McCain defected once again and sided with his Demo buddies.
RINO through and through. McCain cannot be trusted.
Remember the Keating 7?
Coleman? What happened to his spine? The rest are no surprise, but I didn't think Coleman was the kind of guy who ran away from the environmental front groups for the anti-capitalist global socialists and their allies in the scumbag liberal press like a scared bunny rabbit....
What the hell has John McCain done besides screw up the election process.
McCain may be a hero but he has not been much of a Republican hero lately.
bttt
