A violent street gang whose members were arrested as part a nationwide sweep by Immigration and Customs officials on Monday had ties to al Qaida, U.S. intelligence officials say.
Officials said the Central American gang MS-13 is one of the largest and most violent street gangs in the United States, and the majority of its members are in the country illegally. The gang has carried out beheadings and grenade attacks in Central America and is known to hack their enemies with machetes in cities along the East Coast in the United States.
Intelligence officials warned in January that al-Qaida members have been seen in El Salvador with MS-13 members, raising concerns the gang may be smuggling terrorists into the United States.
Homeland Security Deputy Secretary James Loy called MS-13 an emerging threat to the United States, referring to the gang and al-Qaida in the same breath in testimony to Congress. Besides al-Qaida, Loy said, "We are seeing the emergence of other threatening groups and gangs like MS-13 that will also be destabilizing influences."
Local law enforcement officials are aware of MS-13's al Qaida link.
"The terrorist aspect, especially when you think in terms of 9/11 and how intent these terrorists are, will turn the heat up on our efforts with MS-13," Boston police Detective Joseph Fiandaca told reporters at the time.
"MS-13 is the most dangerous gang in the area," he said. "They are big. They are mobile. Now they have a terrorist connection."
103 members of MS-13 were arrested on Monday, with the highest concentration coming from the New York metropolitan area.

Apparently they're fond of having MS13 tattooed somewhere, or sometimes simply 13. It tends to be in someplace very visible, like back of the neck, down the arms, wherever. I believe I recall there being some more "presentable" members that have easily concealed tats, though.

I know this may be percieved as "statist"...but I beleive from a law enforcement and counter-terrorism standpoint, it makes alot of sense: round up and detain ALL street gang members. Start in New York, LA, Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Miami, Dallas, and Atlanta first, and work down from there. You'd really be killing 2 birds with one stone.

What exactly is M-13? Is it political? a drug gang? a street gang? All of the above? What does M-13 stand for?

They've had three and a half years to secure the ports and borders, fine employers who hire illegals and DEPORT THE ILLEGALS and the W administration has done ZIP, ZERO, NADA!
Until these measures are enacted there will NEVER be a victory in the "war on terrorism", there will NEVER be a victory in the "war on drugs" and there will definitely NEVER be "homeland security!"
IKE DID IT, SO CAN BUSH!

Think I read somewhere that the "13" refers to 13th street in LA, which is the neigborhood where the gang got its start.

You can go to this site to learn all about gangs including MS-13, where they are located and their connection to terrorists. There is a wealth of information on the site.

What in the freeking Hell is going on that these violent scumbags get into the USA to begin with? The monstrous sized fed gov that consumes trillions, is an utter failure at this constitutional duty. If the ancient chinese with no earth moving machinery could build a 4000 mile long wall 2000 years ago, why cant the greatest nation on earth do something about a a boarder 1/4th as long? This situation is dreadful and appalling and pres Bush needs is derelict in his duties/

I am so furrious i just sent this to the white house:
First of all, why is the web site of the White House available in
Spanish? This is supposed to Be America, not Central America. Which
brings me to my main point. In my estimation, and that of a majority
of your constituents, you are failing to protect the southern border
of the nation form illegal infiltration. From the news:
"A violent street gang whose members were arrested as part a
nationwide sweep by Immigration and Customs officials on Monday had
ties to al Qaida, U.S. intelligence officials say.
Officials said the Central American gang MS-13 is one of the largest
and most violent street gangs in the United States, and the majority

like MS-13 that will also be destabilizing influences."
(This is a tragedy in the making)
The Question for you Mr. President, is How the Hell are these
violent thugs getting into the USA in the first place? There are vast
thousands of illegals crossing the border with Mexico and very little
is done to stem the tide. Lip service is given to this, but the
mission is a failure in every sense of the word.. While this tragedy
in the making is going on, you spend political capital on SS, to fix
a problem that rears its head in 2042. We dont care about 2042 now,
we want our country secured right now. We want all illegals rounded
up and deported. We dont need any migrant worker programs to serve as
a quasi-legal conduit for smuggling violent gangs like MS-13 into
the nation to victimize American Citizens. If that loses a few
hispanic votes, so be it, the Republicans will lose far more votes
from the citizenry if this keeps up.
The Chinese built a 4000 mile wall 2000 years ago to secure their
border. Cant the greatest nation in the world secure a border 1/4
that long? 2000 years later? Please reconsider your priorities
Mr.President, dont make me sorry I voted for you.

I'm not saying that's a bad analogy. Not at all.
An interesting fact, though, is that the Great Wall of China was built with slave labor, with conscripts consisting of every male between fifteen and sixty. It is estimated that for every mile of the Great Wall that was constructed, there were over a hundred deaths through overwork, starvation, and malnutrition.
For the Chinese Grand Canal, the toll was even higher.

'The Illegal-Alien Crime Wave'
by Heather Mac Donald
http://www.city-journal.org/html/14_1_the_illegal_alien.html
In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.
A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern California is illegal; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County.
The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal, from Central America and Mexico.

-Yes, he didn't believe it, and he then posted a comment that crime rates were down. Of course he never provided a source. Quite typical of that crowd; demanding sources, yet rarely providing any themselves.

Granted, crime rates are down, but they are still way too high. And with these MS-13/18 gangs pouring into the country, it portends a bad trend for the future. Unless of course, they are dealt with.
