Molly Hatchet Lead Singer Dies at 53

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Danny Joe Brown, the lead singer of the Southern rock band Molly Hatchet, died of complications from diabetes, his family said Monday. He was 53.

Brown died Thursday at his home in Davie, a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, his sister Lyndia Brown said.

"He had been in the hospital for about four weeks before he died, and he wanted to come home and he was home for 30 minutes when he died," Lyndia Brown told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his children and his wife."

In 1975, the Jacksonville native joined Molly Hatchet, named after a Southern prostitute who allegedly beheaded and mutilated her clients. Brown was frontman for its self-titled album in 1978, which went platinum. In 1979 the next album, "Flirtin' With Disaster," sold over 2 million copies.

Brown left the band in the early 1980s because of his diabetes.

After creating his own group, the Danny Joe Brown Band, he rejoined Molly Hatchet in 1982 to participate in the album "No Guts ... No Glory." The was album had limited success and the group eventually disbanded.

Molly Hatchet reunited and toured in 1996 for release of the album "Devil's Canyon."

Brown ended his career after a stroke in 1998, according to reports.

"Danny was way more than a signer for rock 'n' roll band. He was great brother, a wonderful son," Lyndia said. "He is going to be missed terribly by everybody."

Damn. I saw these guys in concert back about '84 or so. They headlined with Kansas. Both groups were absolutely fantastic and Molly Hatchet put on one of the best shows I've ever been to. So sad to hear about Danny's death.

Are you the one who put "Singer" in quotes?

That's brutal.

I love the lead break in that song.

The one concert I missed out on was Molly Hatchet and the Outlaws at the Marice Gussman center in Miami, around '79 or so.

My buddies came back and said that those two bands literally blew the plaster off the ceiling.

I saw them a year or two later, when they had already fallen from grace. Mother's Finest was opening for them then.

I’ve been to alabama, people ain’t a whole lot to see;
Skynyrd says it’s a real sweet home but it ain’t nothing to me.
Charlie daniels will tell you the good lord lives in tenessee, ha!
But I’m going back to gator country where the wine and the women are free.

Chorus:
There’s a gator in the bushes, he’s calling my name,
And a saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There’s many roads I’ve travelled but they all kind of look the same.
There’s a gator in the bushes, lord, he calling my name.

Old richard betts will tell ya lord he was born a ramblin’ man.
Well he can ramble back to georgia but I won’t give a damn.
Elvin bishop out struttin his stuff with little miss slick titty boom.
But I’m going back to gator country to get me some elbow room.

Chorus:
There’s a gator in the bushes he’s calling my name.
And saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There’s many roads I’ve travelled but they all kinda look the same.
There’s a gator in the bushes, lord, he calling my name. yep.

There’s marshall tucker riding a rainbow searching for a pot of gold.
Well they can take the highway, baby, and they can take all they can hold.
The outlaws down in tampa town it’s a mighty fine place to be.
They got green grass and got high tides and sure looks good to me.

Chorus:
There’s a gator in the bushes, he’s calling my name.
Saying come on boy, you better make it back home again.
There’s so many roads I’ve travelled but they all kinda look the same.
There’s a gator in the bushes , lord, he’s calling my name.

Lead break

Oh gator country,
A little bit of that chomp chomp

Lead break

Hi All-

Diabetes can be a brutal killer, but you would think that AIDS is the only disease on this planet with all the hootin' and hollerin' from the Hollywood bunch.

The lead singer from Poison has had his struggles with this malady as well. He was always quite an entertainer, too. I especially feel sorry for the fit, younger people who get this disease through no fault of their own.

OMG! This is really sad news...Danny was a great singer, & Molly Hatchet was a PROUD Southern rock band. I saw them in Little Rock after he left the band the 1st time, & the new guy just wasn't even close to having Danny's vocal talents. RIP, Danny...us Southern/Confederate boys are gonna miss you.
