The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

U.S. works 'day and night' to rein in al-Qaida
Full Story

WASHINGTON - Prompted by new intelligence indicating Osama bin Laden reached out to the most feared terrorist in Iraq, President Bush charged Thursday that "al-Qaida still hopes to attack us on our own soil."

"Recently, we learned that Osama bin Laden has urged the terrorist Zarqawi to form a group to conduct attacks outside Iraq, including here in the United States," Bush said at the swearing-in of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff.

The president vowed, "We're working every day and night to dismantle (bin Laden's) network and to bring him to justice."

People suspected of being members of a terrorist group are not automatically barred from legally buying a gun, and the investigation, conducted by the Government Accountability Office, indicated that people with clear links to terrorist groups had regularly taken advantage of this gap. (snip)

Our legal system requires that you be charged and convicted of a felony to lose access to firearms. Renouncing citizenship, use of certain illegal drugs and involuntary commitment to a mental health facility are also disqualifiers. Our legal system disallows "prior restraint". You actually have to commit a crime, not just be suspected of being interested in doing so.

Certain states such as California will pull your firearms in cases of misdemeanor offenses. A restraining order for domestic violence is often used to support a temporary revocation of 2nd amendment rights.

Creating an inventory of 100 to 150 transformers would take several years if they were ordered in bulk, Pry said.

Smooth move. Tell the bad guys about your soft spot. Notice that no mention was made of railroad bridges. Coal fired electric plants have a finite storage capacity on the ground. Blow a bridge between the coal supply and plant, and you take the plant offline when the coal is exhausted.

"Al Qaeda Militants Surrender Philippine Jail"

Monday, March 14, 2005

AP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MANILA, Philippines  — Police surrounded the facility at Manila's Camp Bagong Diwa (search), where 425 suspects are detained, including 129 suspected members and leaders of the Al Qaeda-linked (search) Abu Sayyaf group.

"There was some delay because they feared for their safety," said Avelino Razon, police chief for the metropolitan Manila area. "But they changed their minds and they've agreed to come out."

Under the agreement to end the daylong standoff, two inmates were to address the media, and the others were then to emerge in groups of about 10, said Mujib Hataman, a Muslim congressman who was negotiating with the inmates by telephone."

I woke up Sunday visiting my parents in Clinton Iowa. I turned fox news on to see what happened to the nut that shot the judge. Instead they were covering the guy who shot eight people including himself. Then I hear it happened in Wisconsin. Then I heart it happened in Brookfield. Then I hear it happened at a hotel. Then I hear it happened at the Sheraton, the very place I am to drop off of my rental car in three hours . . . Small world.

The memorial they had set up was beautiful. Lots of very emotional people at the scene. Lots of media. One police car.

prayers going up . . .

Imagine my 84 year old dad, hard of hearing, trying to reorder his 3-month supplies of medication thru Caremark- and reaching an Indian woman who speaks with a strong accent and very rapidly.....

I've decided from now on, to keep going up the supervisory ladder until I find someone who speaks comprehensible English.

REPORT: QAEDA ALLY MAY TARGET U.S. THEATERS, SCHOOLS

Mon Mar 14, 7:07 AM ET Top Stories - Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, al Qaeda's chief ally in Iraq, may be planning attacks on "soft targets" in the United States including movie theaters, restaurants and schools, Time magazine reported on Sunday.

White House national security adviser Stephen Hadley would not discuss the specific warning, which Time said was circulated among U.S. security agencies last week in a restricted bulletin.

But he said the administration was concerned about reports -- "which we think are very credible" -- that Zarqawi is working more closely with Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda organization.

Hadley said movie theaters, restaurants and schools "are the kinds of targets we know that al Qaeda has traditionally been concerned about."

"But we, at this point sitting here, do not have evidence of a specific operation by Zarqawi's organization targeting those kinds of targets. We just don't have that kind of information at this point," Hadley told CNN's "Late Edition."

The warning comes two weeks after President Bush, in a rare public mention of the mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, said stopping bin Laden from a new attack on U.S. soil was "the greatest challenge of our day."

Time said the bulletin was based on the interrogation of a member of Zarqawi's organization.

It cited Zarqawi's belief that "if an individual has enough money, he can bribe his way into the U.S.," by obtaining a visa to Honduras and then traveling across Mexico and the southern U.S. border.

But the magazine quoted intelligence agencies as saying there is no evidence that Zarqawi's agents have infiltrated the United States.

Bin Laden has eluded U.S. efforts to hunt him down, and he occasionally surfaces in a video or audiotape to show followers he is still alive. U.S. intelligence agencies believe he is hiding in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Zarqawi, blamed for orchestrating insurgent attacks against U.S. forces and Iraqis, has become the most hunted man in Iraq. In December, an audiotape message purportedly from bin Laden formally named Zarqawi as the head of al Qaeda in Iraq.

Safety alert by divers over stolen equipment

Bahrain- DEEP-SEA divers have issued a plea to thieves to return over BD4,000 worth of specialist equipment before they are seriously injured.

Aquatique Dive Centre managing director Rob Gregory told the GDN that in the wrong hands, the stolen equipment could cause serious damage. "This is highly specialised first aid equipment, which we use in diver training sessions and rescue operations," he said.

"Although these are all worth a lot of money, they wouldn't be worth a lot to people on the black market because they are so specialised."

Govt. Releases Report on Aviation Security

WASHINGTON - The nation's aviation system remains vulnerable to attacks by al-Qaida and other terrorists who may be targeting noncommercial aircraft and helicopters, according to a government report.

But officials said the report by the Homeland Security Department and the FBI concludes that commercial airlines also remain susceptible to attack, despite billions of dollars worth of security investments. Moreover, members of al-Qaida are believed to be examining and testing U.S. security systems for weaknesses, officials said.

Bird Flu Clusters May Signal Virus Change - WHO

HANOI (Reuters) - A cluster of human bird flu cases among relatives and possibly health workers in Vietnam may show the virus is changing into a form that can be passed on by humans, the World Health Organization said.

"Such cases can provide the first signal that the virus is altering its behavior in human populations and thus alert authorities to the need to intervene quickly," the WHO said in a statement seen on Monday.

Funny, I used to listen to a country crooner called CW McCall and he had a song about Wolf Creek Pass. I always thought it was a made up place for the song. He made it sound DANGEROUS too!

When the trucker song era passed, CW McCall morphed into another group and I'll bet this will surprise you: Manheim Steamroller.
