Gag me with a perfect souffle.
On the occasion of Martha Stewart's release from prison, Katie Couric just completed a conversation with one of Martha's good friends, Susan Warburg, that was much more sorority gab fest and sensitivity training session than anything resembling a journalistic interview. I half-expected them to lounge on big fluffy pillows on the floor while sipping hot cocoa with little marshmallows floating on top.
Katie was emitting her super-empathetic body language and vibes, while dressed in a chic, glossy black leather (Naugahyde?) jacket - after all, Martha might be watching and you wouldn't want to look like a nebbish.
You misguided folks out there might have thought Martha was a hard, ambitious woman who had put career success ahead of everything else.
Wrong! To understand the real Martha, think Mother-Teresa-meets-Oprah.
Katie began with this 'hard-hitting' question:
"Tell me how she was feeling and her state of mind."
Couric, ever the tough journalist, followed with this zinger:
"It seems as if she's really developed a bond with some of the inmates."
But as friend Susan explained, Martha-the-Humanitarian is who she's always been and what her life has always been about. It's just that prison gave her more time to devote to the driving passion of her life: helping others.
When the sweet-but-rather-hapless Susan stumbled in documenting just how wonderful Martha was, Couric rushed to her aid "I understand that she helped one of the inmates repair a family rift."
Yes, agreed, Susan, "that's what she thinks about: family."
How has prison changed Martha?, wondered Katie.
Susan: "It hasn't changed her. Her concern and curiosity has always been about asking about the other person."
The gag-a-thon continued with this 'question': "the Martha you know has no resemblance to the unflattering portrayals. Does she feel she was unfairly targeted?"
Susan: "She's never played a victim or complained about anything. She's just been very positive, focused on helping people around her."
Given that Martha has so adored the time she's had to help others, Katie wondered why she'd want to jump back into the corporate fray.
"Because her creativity is what she is all about," explained Susan.
Wait, I thought she was all about saving humanity? Oh well, never mind.
Today Show gag-me-with-a-souffle ping.
Katie: "Do you think Martha will become an advocate for prisoners?"
Where's my barf-bag ...
Now we're going to be inundated with Martha reports for days on end. Huge barf!
Hello governs...How long will this love fest for Martha go on do you suppose? The news has devoted alot of time to it. How she has lost weight, made more money. It has been nauseating. :) Between her and Jackson's trial my head is spinning with all the hysterics.
Mega thanks this morning for watching and reporting. I could not have endured it first hand.
Given the two, I'd take Martha anyday......at least she's not a perv.
Well if you can't find your barf bag, make one! I'm sure Martha could tell you how. She's a helper of the little people. :)
Yeh, she had her bunk mate give her a tatoo of a 19th Century German Christmas cookie.
I swear I can imagine a 'Martha Christmas Special' with a few of her old con friends invited over to the mansion - so long as the cameras are rolling.
True, so very true. I just wish they would report more important things and not fixate on the smaller ones.
It ain't over between us Martha!
Great description, governsleastgovernsbest.Thank you.
Hatie Couric is just trying to keep the good newz coming, they ignore the other news-the ME revolutions...eh, eh
I have to say, this was a tough one to stomach. Give me Katie purring over some liberal politico over this. The saccharine butter-wouldn't-melt in Martha's mouth theme was truly gaggifying.
Well, which one is it?
LOL. Prison Girlzz Gone Wild!
Martha my dear...don't forget me.
We are not enlightened enough to understand that Martha is all things to all people. She is a transcendental spirit living simultaneously on many levels in ways that we crude creatures of the right cannot fathom.
Shouldn't that be "her fellow inmates"? Katie makes it sound like Martha has just been away on safari at the Central Park Zoo.
