Laser Guided Plasma Weapon Readied for Military

From the Ionatron website:

Why Directed Energy Weapons?

Ionatron developed and patented LIPC weapons because we saw a need for a reliable, humane, light-speed defense mechanism against the growing threat of terror attacks. The U.S. government recognizes the value of LIPC technology and has commissioned Ionatron to produce LIPC units for testing. These weapons are also appropriate for commercial security firms, local and regional governments, police forces, border patrols, energy facility security forces, port authorities, and other organizations that protect people, places, and resources.

Terror threats are unpredictable by nature; the need to counter quickly and effectively is paramount. LIPC weapons are precise and fast-acting. They are suitable for use on vehicles, boats, aircraft, shipping containers, and just about anywhere else light-speed security is needed. The adjustable range of LIPC weapons, their light-speed disabling action, and their flexibility make them ideal for defense. Lethal-capacity versions also exist.

What is LIPC?

Laser-induced plasma channel (LIPC) weapons work like “man-made lightning” to disable people or vehicles that threaten our security.

Man-made lightning is not new; it was first demonstrated in the late 1890s by Nikola Tesla, the inventor of the AC induction motor. The transmission of energy without wires is the heart of the concept—man-made lightning is nothing more than high-voltage discharge. Ionatron improved the concept by adding a special kind of laser that lets us speed up the discharge and precisely control where the man-made lightning goes.

LIPC technology uses the conductive plasma formed when laser filaments pass through the atmosphere. Laser filaments are created by ultra-short (femto-second class) laser pulses generated by high peak power/low average power lasers. The conductive plasma acts like a highly efficient virtual wire for the controlled transmission of electrical energy. Ionatron’s weapons improve on Nature’s high-voltage discharges by precisely controlling where this man-made lightning goes, in both direction and range.

What’s a femto-second? It’s a duration of 10-15 seconds, or one thousandth of one millionth of a millionth of a second. Light travels only 0.3 micrometers in 1 femto-second.

I came across this company's website the other day after reading a related article here on FR. I didn't realize just how close we were to having actual, working "phasers". This thing can stun or it can be set to kill. It can be mounted on tanks, helicopters, airplanes and ships or it can be scaled down to be hand carried. It can disable cars and other vehicles from a distance. High speed police chases could be a thing of the past. According to the site, the first production models should be available in 2007.

Also of interest, they are using the technology to create what they call a "portal denial system" which is, in essence a force field. There is video of the system working. It has three beams of energy going across a doorway like electric prison bars. Pretty cool. Check the site out.

Ive also heard on Paul Harvey that a "cloaking device" may not be far off.

On a side note. Star Trek Enteprise, a franchise that has inspired this kind of thing for nearly 40 years has been cancelled by UPN. Big fan movement has raised over 3 million bucks to save this inspirational show.

Save Enteprise from cancellation.....

Tesla Tesla Tesla. PRobably the greatest genius who ever lived! But sadly without sufficient people skills to realize that just because he was amazingly clever did not mean that normal people (who couldn't even begin to understand many of the things he was working on back then) would appreciate him. And the final straw was Edison, another bright person (though not exactly a Tesla) but with loads of people skills, basically churning negative perception of Tesla. For example when Edison was championin DC electricity, and Tesla was advocating AC, Edison basically made the first electric chair and had it used to kill a convict (as well as several stray dogs) to illustrate how 'dangerous' Alternating Current electricity was!

Some of the things Tesla was working on are still BEYOND common modern comprehension. That guy was a genius of a magnitude above most of his contemporaries, past present (and probably) future. His only drawback was that even though he was amazingly smart he was still vulnerable to social ignorance in the masses, as well as stratagems and wiles from his scientific competitors.

I believe that Nikola Tesla invented such a device many, many years ago.

He was reported to have built a small prototype but it disappeared along with the plans from the former USSR upon his death.

Here's a link to a video demonstration of the "portal denial system". The link is on the right side of the screen. The link says "Click here to see demonstration", if that isn't blazingly obvious enough.

LOLOL! Too bad the gun shop owner didn't give him one.I'd like to see one in use.
I'm not familiar with this technology. When I think plasma, I think either a blood component,a type of welder/cutter,or a really expensive TV. So,what's the deal with plasma rifles?
