Rating the radio talk show hosts
Posted on 03/03/2005 1:31:07 PM PST by EveningStar
Since I retired several months ago, I've had plenty of time to listen to talk radio and I've been able to come up with my own factors for rating some of the hosts.
It is this: Who provides depth and insight and who doesn't?
To me, those who provide depth and insight include: Rush Limbaugh Dennis Prager Michael Medved Larry Elder
Those who fall into the "No **** Sherlock / Captain Obvious to the Rescue" category include: Laura Ingraham Sean Hannity
That's my opinion. What's yours?
TOPICS: Constitution/Conservatism; Culture/Society; Philosophy; Your Opinion/Questions
KEYWORDS: besttalkshowhost; gr8american; hewittnumberone; inmybook; savage; talkradio; talkshowhosts

The few times I've been in San Francisco, Melanie and Lee impressed the hell out of me. Maybe it's time to find an online feed. Reeeaaalllly good.

There is a guy in the LA area that is a million years old and a friend of John Birch. I caught him when on business a few weeks ago. Laughed my 6 o'clock off. Can't remember his name. Les...something.

Tony is indeed a giant. I know he is going to recover and be back on the air soon.

I mentioned Roger later. Actually, I wouldn't mind if he sat in half the time for Rush.

Hugh Hewitt has the most well-rounded shows in the business. I LoVE the Shakespeare and the Classical Music Prof.....I have learned so much.

Agree with the constant talk about 'them'. Sean is the worst. Savage is sometimes good but I heard a caller say something about there being 12 Supreme Court Justices and Savage agreed.
Just heard him now(delayed) that there were 11 or 12 justices. He is very smart but I can't understand his ignorance on this. Seems like he's winging it too much and doesn't really prepare like Rush, Hugh, Medved and Ingraham.

Jim Quinn - Local Pittsburgh talkshow host, really brings the issues out and presents it in a way the common person can understand. Gets me fired up to keep up the good fight.
Michael Savage - Tells it like it is, gets mad a lot but I understand why, I get mad a lot too. Quinn gets me going in 1st and 2nd gear, Savage kicks it into 3rd and 4th. Savage doesn't like party politics, he is for what is best for America. I think he is my favorite along with Quinn.
Mark Levin - I don't hear him too often but when the AM skip comes in, I hear him over WABC. I love it when Hannity has him on. He hows no mercy to the liberals.
Sean Hannity, very likeable, somewhat of a lightweight, but not all of us can be heavy hitters and despite some of my misgivings on him about his feelings on us Freepers, I still see him as a team player, maybe a good starter to get the younger set to come to conservatism and go from there.
Glenn Beck - Can be loud but love his satire. I also like his stories about him growing up. He's 41 and I'll be 39 soon so we seem to have similar memories. I see him like a big brother sometimes when he talks about these things. Love his "Freak Juries" (IMHO, I think a Glenn Beck "Freak Jury" would fly rings around the Supreme Court) and "Jepretardy" bits.
Phil Hendrie - A little over the top but funny. Love it when he plays the oboxious guy doing some obnoxious thing and the callers beat him up on it. A Conservative Democract, he seems to tow the conservative line a lot.
Art Bell - Conservative/libertarian, I get into the paranormal a lot and Art Bell was the ticket into that. I loved him in the mid 1990's when the show was more caller driven and less guest driven where the subject ranged from paranormal to politics to current events. His bits with JC along with "Charlie Liberal" and "Dr. Democrat" are funny. Being an amateur radio operator, I love it when he has Wayne Green on although when he brings up the topic, "we didn't go to the Moon," Wayne jumps the shark.
Chuck Harder - A nationalist like Michael Savage, kindler and gentler, but he tackles the issues and is not afraid to take both parties to task. I hardly hear him anymore, I wish I could find a radio station that carries him.

Not staged. He has a number of lines and the calleers with the gist of their point on the screen in front of him. He tailors his comments a bit to the callers he has and picks his callers according to what he needs.

I agree that Tammy Bruce is very good. I've heard you on MANY shows but not on TB's. I always perk up when I hear it's you on any show and I'm impressed on how you are always informed on the topic.

Thanks. I have been on Tammy's show. About three years ago I got to meet her at an event at David Horowitz's house in Malibu. I was absolutely floored when I said hi to her and she said, "You're Doug from Upland." She is a prize and, coming from the feminist left, is a very effective spokesperson for our side.

Laura Ingraham mixes insight with humor and does a darn good job of it.

Yep, really here in the beautiful bedroom of Upland. The mountains just above us are beautifully white with snow.
