In the wake of the Enron and WorldCom corporate scandals, the purveyors of envy have found another opportunity to preach about what they consider the evils of high CEO salaries, retirements and bonuses. After all, according to them, evil must be afoot when a corporate executive earns more in a week that the average worker earns in an entire year. Let's look at it.
Dishonest Enron and WorldCom CEOs are rare among corporate executives. As such, all CEOs shouldn't be tarnished for the misdeeds of a few any more than we'd tarnish all newspaper reporters because a few among their ranks were liars like the Boston Globe's Patricia Smith and Mike Barnicle, Jayson Blair of the New York Times, and the Washington Post's Janet Cooke.

So does Madonna, A-rod, Julia Roberts etc... You rarely hear about the "injustice" concerning the entertainment types.
most are definately NOT overpaid. But sometimes, one does wonder why in 1 or 2 cases failure is rewarded. I've heard of payment deals with guaranteed bonuses (how can a bonus be guaranteed???). The role of a CEO should be neither underestimated nor overstated. You can't always blame a bad year on the economy or other external factors whilst you always take the credit for a good year.
According to the liberals, anyone making more than another person is overpaid.
After all, we should all be paid exactly the same regardless of the work --- "it's only fair".
The exception would exist for the 'enlightened' that need to lead us --- they will make much, much more and it will never be enough for the good intentions they attempt to ram down our throats.

Exactly. The only way to judge if a person is overpaid in any profession is by performance. It doesn't always work that way, but that's the best way to measure if someone is worth what they make.
The bonus is guaranteed in a contract. If companies don't want to pay those bonuses, don't offer such contracts.
Really it's none of media liberals' business who makes what, as long as the money is made legally.
Williams presents two or three examples and then makes the blanket statement that CEOs are not overpaid. That is just as stupid as someone taking two or three examples and saying that they are.
At any given moment the CEO, you, and the guy who pours soup into his shoe on my subway platform is worth as much or a little as someone is willing to pay.
I dont think they are overpaid ... Sure there are bad apples and failiures but you simply cant compare it to those that are very good. Buffet comes to mind with his 1 mil fixed salary and many others from Gates to the Google founders as well as the Amazon ceo who burned his own future to carry the company through the survival stages.

In my opinion, anybody able to convince another human being they are worth $40 million a year -- and keep a straight face while doing it -- is worth every penny.
Considering they get bonuses even when they preform poorly, probably.
Unless they're part of the limo liberal crowd like the Hollywood types or that Heinz woman....
Just to tag on here while I don't put a lot of stock in head study stuff I often wonder why well paid liberals are in favor of higher taxes. Sometimes I think it's because they make so much money it has no value to them; If they pay $200k it's nothing but for a family making $50k even $2k can be a lot.
Or maybe it's because they're insecure and don't think that they have really earned it (easy for me to see since they get paid to pretend they're someone else reciting the words of others) so they don't feel like they "earned" it.
As for CEO's when I was in a management position I worked 20 hours a day, 7 days a week (one year I had a total of 18 days when I didn't go into the office) and was always stressed out over earnings and working to make sure we didn't have to lay anyone off, etc. I wasn't paid seven figures, but I felt like I earned every penny.
