The U.S. Supreme Court will hear two cases this week dealing with the Ten Commandments. The issue before the court is to uphold the Ten Commandments as the foundation of our legal history, and thus as acceptable in public places, or to rule their display an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion.
The cases McCreary County v. ACLU of Kentucky and Van Orden v. Perry will be heard back to back tomorrow, March 2. Both seek reversals of lower court decisions. In Van Orden the public display of the Ten Commandments was held not to violate the First Amendment by making a law respecting the establishment of religion. In McCreary, another lower court reached the opposite conclusion.
"Hopefully, the Court will affirm the 5th Circuit's ruling in a companion Ten Commandments case, Van Orden v. Perry, and reverse the ruling by the Sixth Circuit in the McCreary case," says Jan LaRue, Concerned Women for Americas (CWAs) chief counsel. CWA supports the display of the Ten Commandments because of their continuing role in our countrys legal system.
The Supreme Courts decision in these cases will impact many displays of the Ten Commandments in public places throughout the country. The most famous of these is probably the granite monument of the Ten Commandments placed in the Alabama state judicial building by Roy Moore, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court. Moore sacrificed his position for failing to obey the order to remove the monument. His case is not one of those being heard by the Supreme Court this week.

Given the last ruling by the SCOTUS I am not optimistic...
Oh great, I can't wait. Perhaps Justice Kennedy will use the Chinese treatment of the Falun Gong as an "International law precedent" for how Christian expression should be dealt with.
WWED?
What Would Europe do?
I can just imagine.....
They are certainly doing everything before Bush chooses more conservatives to harm America.
They are certainly doing everything before Bush chooses more conservatives to harm America.
This must be ruled upon by the US Constitution and US Laws, Not the European Socialist Constitution or European Laws and guidelines.
SCOTUS's ruling on the Texas Sodomy law is not according to US Laws according to Judge Scalia.
I bet in 6 minutes the judges would start thinking the right way.
Most European nations have an official state religion, so I would imagine that if we follow European precedent, the Supreme Court will rule that Christianity is our state religion.
Every time I see that statement I get apoplexy! For gods sake, the constitution does NOT prohibit the "endorsement" of religion! Damn it. It prohibits the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT from establishing a NATIONAL RELIGION!!!! When will we come to our senses? It's written in plain english for heavens sake.
I'm for starting impeachment proceedings----that would get the "justices" attention.
In 1995 Capitol Hill Review and advisory Board v.Piretti
The court said That the court has "consistantly ruled"
that "it is in fact peculiar to say that government 'promotes' or 'favors' a religious display by
giving it the same access to a public forum all other displays enjoy. And it is a matter of Estalbishment clause jurisprudence we have consistently held tha tit is no violation for government to enact neutral policies that happen to benefit religion.. . . " This seems easy to reconcile to the clea rlanguag eused ,and intent --and to
the findings of both Houses of Congress in 1853-54 on the
Establishment of religion. If they reule against the displays it will certainly mean we are no longer a Constitutional Republic of Laws applied equally to all.
Yeah, and why the you know what are we letting these you know whats get away with this. They are not God.
In fact, that's just what they are doing. Trying to prove they are God. Let's prove them wrong.
Now there is a cause I can get behind.
The court is to uphold the constitution not make law.
WHY is former ACLU member Ruth Bader Ginsburg allowed to vote on ANY case involving suit on behalf of the ACLU?
This is a Christian-founded country. Not a Jewish one.
Uh oh. Can't wait to hear what the Indian Communists have to say on these cases.
