U.N. SEX SCANDAL: HEADS ARE STARTING TO ROLL

By Michelle Malkin   ·   February 28, 2005 10:08 PM

Reuters reports on a possible resignation in the wake of the U.N. Congo peacekeepers/predators crisis:
UNITED NATIONS, Feb 28 (Reuters) - The U.N. representative in the Congo, American William Lacy Swing, may soon resign his post following allegations of widespread sexual abuse by peacekeepers, diplomats said on Monday.

Swing, due in New York on Thursday to confer with Secretary-General Kofi Annan, is expected to submit his resignation then or when he returns to the Congo, the envoys said.

American sources said Swing, a respected retired U.S. diplomat, had wanted to resign twice over the past two years but was persuaded by U.S. and U.N. officials to stay.

In light of the scandals, the envoys said U.N. officials believed it would be a good time to make a change in the top U.N. post in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, although there was no suggestion Swing was personally involved in wrongdoing.

Over the past year, the United Nations has probed 150 allegations against some 50 soldiers of sexual exploitation of women and girls, including gang rapes.

Children as young as 12 or 13 were bribed with eggs, milk or a few dollars in exchange for sex, U.N. reports said.

Swing's pending resignation from the Congo post is all well and good. But what will Kofi Annan be doing about this: U.N. fears peacekeepers commit sex abuse worldwide.

Meanwhile, two new reports on the U.N.'s peacekeeper/predator problem have been prepared. And tomorrow, Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) will hold hearings on the scandal. From AP:

Smith has proposed a bill that would require troop-contributing nations to have codes of conduct in place. Otherwise, the United States would withhold funding for missions.

Withholding funds would be disastrous because the United States, the largest contributor to the United Nations, provides about 25 percent of the peacekeeping budget.

"We're subsidizing this larger than anyone else on Earth and we have a responsibility to make sure, as they're acting in our name, that there be a policy of zero tolerance," Smith said.

.....and Russia (which IMHO will dissolve soon)

Aren't you glad that you didn't invest in the Minsk McDonald's or Vladivostok Krispy Kreme franchise?

Oh my FRiend not for those reasons.

Although many of my investments may be "high risk" they are prudent and in most cases shielded from "attorney action"!

McDonald's and Krispy Creme are a lawsuit in the making anymore....

LoL!

<< My 2-Cents-worth about the UN?

Neal Boortz has the right idea- kick them off US soil, plop them down in Haiti, and tell them, "when you get this straightened out, give us a call..."

Reminiscent of when one of South-East Asia's self-annointed, self-appointed and self-perpetuating petty dictator/emperors offered the Jiang Gang to "help-out" with the running of what passes in "china" for a "government."

Jiang sent back a curt one-liner to the effect that if his gang ever came up short of a mayor for Shanghai, it would consider giving said dictator/emperor a call.

Wait a minute.

Aren't most of the people in the Congo lactose intolerant?

How could they be bribed with milk?

Seriously.

Nice discipline by the way on the military units.

<< Nice discipline by the way on the military units. >>

"Nice" of course being relative -- and "not-nice" being when Koffee was running the un's "military" and Hutus and Tutsies and Wootsies and Oogoo Boogers and Euro-peon islamists and others were willy nilly slaughtering away while his "militaries" ran and he looked the other way.

And we kept up his -- and his and his cronies' Swiss and Liechtenstein and Isle of Man and Oceana and Hong Kong, Singapore, Channel Isles and Cyprus bankers' -- monies rolling in!

Losing a job does not equal the removal of a head. This is nowhere near what needs to happen. But it is a wonderful example of UN justice - the owners get to retire, the owned get to have their babies and deal with the consequences of rape.

Oh gee, he might resign. Hell, he should be stripped, beaten, tarred and feathered. - Then tried.

Anyone who has been in Africa in the past 15 years knows all of these things have been the result of using local (African) forces to police the UN resolutions.

The brutality does not stop at rape.

What no one is openly saying is that situation isn't going to change as long as different tribes police others.

Nothing really matters.
There won't be anybody left in sub-saharan Africa in 50 years anyway.

Has the U.N. really done ANYTHING to help the WORLD since the inception of the U.N.? Has the U.N. hurt the world or helped the world? Has the U.N. prevented any wars or helped to stop any wars since it's inception? Has the cost in time, money, lives been saved since the U.N.'s inception?
If the answer is in the negative, then I would ask if by reasoning, what is the good of the U.N. anymore?

True enough but contingents from the Moslem world and even Europe haven't been much better. The Bulgarian contingent sent to Cambodia a few years ago was a remarkable group. Apparently the rank and file were literally felons. Prison populations were trolled for volunteers. In a win-win situation for the thugs the state offered to grant freedom to anyone who spent a year in the special Bulgarian army detachment sent to Cambodia. The results were interesting to say the least. Large numbers of UN vehicles were totaled by dui's, a number of gunfights between members of the contingent occurred, the Bulgarian thugs robbed local merchants at gunpoint and numerous girls and young women were raped and/or kidnapped. True international ambassadors of good will all.

I couldn't agree with you more.
Isn't internationalism and multiculturalism just wonderful?
Long live the UN.
