Republican Disowns Lesbian Daughter (Keyes)

Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

There is definitely something very messed up within the souls of these people.

Not sure what or who you mean by obsessing with certain sins? This issue has come up because of this article which covers Keyes faith and his public positions on homosexuality and now it has become personal for him in a lot of ways.

All these armchair quarterbacks seem to want to tar and feather him for how he has decided to deal with it. Discerning Christians however understand how he may have come to this decision.

No one size fits all, everyone would have to come to terms on the best way to deal with a homosexual sibling, there are a lot of things that would have to be considered. But once Maya decided to come out to the world and proclaim her mockery of God's Holy Word then Keyes had no choice but to proclaim her null and void in his life.

He probably was, I was just too young to realize it. I'm still on the young side for this forum.

Right, all sins are wrong, why some people obsessed with one certain kind is a mystery to me.

So you're a sin relativist? I assume that's unless the sin affects you directly? I bet you didn't even mind when Clinton was having sexual relations with that woman, Ms. Lewinsky...or even when he sinned by lying under oath about it.

I guess why worry about any sin since we are all sinnners. No one is wrong since everyone is wrong? That theory really can't stand up to a 2 minute logic test. Truth is not unloving. Trying to raise up a child in the way she should go is not unloving. It's essential. Some wrongs are worse and more dangerous than others. Enabling a destructive sin by being too timid to speak the truth is not love.

Are you speaking as a sweet-spirited Christian?

Sometimes the truth is not "sweet".

It's funny how everything the Keyes-bashers say Keyes is, they themselves are.

It's funny how everything the Keyes-supporters say the Keyes-bashers are, they themselves are.

Alan Keyes knew on that day that his very own daughter was a lesbian and instead of shutting up, chose to trash another man's daughter without mentioning his own.

That is a really creepy thing to do.

I think you finally have it. Keyes tells the truth about the sin of homosexuality and people say, that is mean-spirited and then they call him an SOB? (with sweetness of course).

That is so mean-spirited of you to want Keyes to OUT his own daughter. I can't believe you suggest that he should have OUTED his own daughter first, before he could comment on the topic of the question he had just been asked. Also the topic of the interview. Unbelievable

Joe, there is a trend at FR, if you run with a big enough gang and lose an arguement bad enough, you call in for reinforcements. Remember, not exactly to help them debate the subject, but to try to bait you to lose your temper so they can call the mods on you. Keep your cool (as you have) and they will disappear after doing their best to pull you down.

Thanks for the headsup. I see a lot of the same tactics over at the forum I'm a moderator at. What it really reveals is immaturity, shallowness and pettiness on behalf of those who resort to those wort of underhanded tactics. Their lack of being able to support their assertions or being able to debate in an intellecutally honest manner generally brings out their true nature.

No, you don't get it at all.

Nobody here said that telling the truth about the sin of homosexuality is "mean-spirited".

IMHO cutting off your child's college tuition and disowning them because they dare commit a sin YOU disapprove of, even though you are a sinner too, is being a self-righteous, mean-spirited and hypocritical SOB.

And I say that with all sweetness, of course. :)

I happen to like Keyes because he speaks his mind and is not duplicitous.

So all sins are equal in your eyes and no one should ever condemn anyone for anything?

I think fornication is fornication, whether it's homosexual fornication or heterosexual fornication.

What do YOU think?

Since you can read these people's minds and past and know all things they should and should not be doing

I never claimed that. Are you claiming to know what I think? If so, please don't try to make a living as a psychic.

Yeah. Keep telling yourself that. You've just out-debated us all, on your "first" day here (making artful use of the non-sequitur, I might add). Uh huh.

Nobody suggested that; it is suggested that prehaps Keyes wasn't in any position to cast stones at another man's family.

He should have just shut the heck up.

Very nice use of insult and ad hominems couched as "mature debate".....or should that be, "de bait"?

This is truly amazing; evidently it's still the rule that any and all that disagree with Keyes must be burned at the stake.

Typical. Bait, get a response, then accuse the responder of baiting.

Yeah, I really believe you just signed up this week. LOL
