Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
The young girl is out of control, I feel sorry for her.
Very good! Thank you for posting this.
Looks like the Keyes did something right. The girl understands and appreciates integrity and truth and is just as willing as her daddy to speak it.
I identified with her remark about her mother being more conservative than her dad, btw. I can just imagine the conversations they must have.
Was Keyes lying about his daughter in bashing Mary Cheney? Is this or is this not true? Did he know of his own daughter's sexuality when trashing the Vice President's daughter, but try to keep it dishonestly under wraps? And if he DID know of his daughter's sexuality, it is disgraceful that he would trash the Vice President's daughter at the same time.
He had to remain consistent?
He had the PERFECT opportunity to NOT say a word, refuse to be baited by the reporter, and say something along the lines of "Well, I'm not going to be drawn into discussion individual people," or something like that.
But he didn't. He TOOK the opportunity to add to the trashing of Mary Cheney by saying "'Of course she is,' he replied. 'That goes by definition. Of course she is.'"
If he knew about his daughter at the time, how sad and how painful the interview's direction must have been.
Right; sad and painful for HIM, but that didn't stop HIM from saying something that must have been "sad and painful" for another family, right?
But, it doesn't matter who we're talking about, the truth is the truth
The truth is the truth; and the truth is that Alan Keyes knew on that day that his very own daughter was a lesbian and instead of shutting up, chose to trash another man's daughter without mentioning his own.
It all seems so unseemly.
Yes, he did.
Here's a timeline of Keyes actions:
High school: discovers she is a lesbian
Senior year high school: Keyes allows her to apply to Brown University without asking for a scholarship.
Election campaign: accepts her taking a semester off from college... acccepts her working on his campaign... accepts her living in his apartment
Campaign ends
She "comes out" publicly... no funds for Brown... ejected from apartment
Per post 451 on this thread.
Actually, the timeline is wrong; he never "disowned" her until January when she attended a "counter inauguration" rally.
Howlin, I agree with you. That just seems so low and devious.
Of course it is, but you'll never convince some people it isn't.
To be fair, I don't know how much control he has over what some people say here - but I will offer this: If Alan Keyes is the loving, Christian parent his supporters believe him to be, he would have been very displeased to see the way Maya was treated when she logged on here a week or so ago. To see grown men beating up on a confused and wounded young woman in an effort to shelter and protect her father - who can no doubt take care of himself - was beyond pathetic.
If he's half the man people say he is, it had to have made him angry to see it.
And they probably think they scored some kind of perverted points with him.
OMG. I am getting an eyeful here tonight.
I doubt it. I would bet that her father and most of those on this board who are so upset with her would be much more tolerant.
In fact, I'd be willing to bet that many of those condemning her here have sinned, even sexually (like fornication or adultery).
The reason so many have the impression that she was completely cut off was because, if I remember correctly, she originally presented it that way.
That was my impression as well.
You've gotta be kidding me. During the election, anyone who dared to voice a negative word about Keyes was banned or suspended, and you know that.
The reporter was trying to make him look bad because most reporters do not like social conservatives, especially black ones. You can't be honest in this country or you will make big enemies and the press will eat you alive. The fact that Mary Cheney was already out and a political liability made it easy to answer the question put to Keyes. Keyes did not attack her, that is nonsense, he just made the obvious application of his 'just stated' definition.
I think Keyes would say that his daughter now fits the same definition if he were asked, and then people would attack him for that. Hey, the guy kicked his own daughter out when he realized she was totally unrepentant and a politcal tool for the left, just like Mary Cheney was when he honestly applied his 'just stated' definition. Until his own daughter proved she was not going to be corrected, she was not in Mary Cheney's category. Now she is and Keye's actions were consistant.
Some of you must have some other reason you don't like him, because his actions were consistant. I admit, I just don't like the guy because I just don't like him. Keyes would have lost anyway, because Illinois is a welfare state, but he needs to learn how to be a politician, you have to lie and evade.
Let's stay on track and get the Supreme Court back in good hands. I disagree with Keyes on many things but he was not nearly the tax and spend extremist that Obama is.
I share your suspicion.
I wonder who put her up to this ? I'd bet there is someone pushing the girl to cause him problems. No parent handles their kid being gay well. It's devastating, there are more people involved than just the gay person. And being as he is a preacher he will stick up for what he teaches because that's what he believes in his heart. People want to crucify him for standing up for his beliefs.
I'm a veteran of these threads. This one is mild. : )
Alan Keyes is not now,nor has he ever been a "preacher",nor a minister, nor a reverend of any kind. He is a Roman Catholic.
I don't believe that you need to lie and evade to be a politician. I just don't believe that.
Whatever, he is a man of the bible. Gay people are the most intolerant people on the planet, this is being proven on a daily basis now.
