Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

She at least waited until he got is ass handed to him in the election

I'm glad you said that. I want to tell you how much I regret the enormous effort I invested trying to run for office, honestly and in the spirit of public service, to represent wholly ungrateful people such as you.

You deserve the most wicked of representatives in office to rob, cheat and steal from the public purse.

For your delight in a righteous man being defeated in an election, you deserve the worst kind of scoundrel as a representative.

My feelings exactly. Keyes could have deflected this by acting like the Cheneys. Who cares if Keyes daughter is gay? Her problem was using her father as a pawn. Everyone involved failed miserably.

He can love his daughter without accepting her lifestyle choice. When that lifestyle choice comes out in full against the very principles of morality that Doctor Keyes believes in, he's compelled and justified in his decisions, as difficult as they are.

Hopefully with age, wisdom will come and his daughter will reconsider her behavior.

Yes indeedy, you sound like you live by your OWN morals, very judgmental morals at that. Yet you rail against others for seemingly doing the very same thing that you're doing now. Too bad, so sad!

I try to live my life by morals embedded from Christian principles, not by my own moralistic flights of fantasy. I am not a fan of holier-than-thou types but at the same time I do not condemn those who make an honest effort trying to better their lives and all of society thru Christian doctrine.

They're allowing their headstrong adult daughter to live the lifestyle she has chosen, completely free of any interference.

What is wrong with that?

Agreed.

He could have disowned here before she took a sememster off to work on his campaign. He already knew she was lesbian... it only became an issue when whe came out to the public.

It's the ebarrassment to himself, not the lesbianism that he rejects.

That's not ok.

The barrel of this points both ways.
In some eyes, this is wrong while Others see it justified.

First of all, she is not entitled to anything.
Secondly, she burned that bridge and is old enough to deal
with the consequences whether or not she is a spoiled little brat bull.

Certainly there are a few uppity Lesbians out there that will take her in
and hold her up as a trophy. /laugh

/Salute to Alan Keyes

"The parents removed their financial support"

as I understand it, the daughter attends Brown University ... a cool $40K a year for starts.

Sooooooooooo who offered her the scholarship? That ain't chump change. It's not likely Brown, so where is this money coming from ?

Love the sinner. Hate the sin.

If you are a professing Christian, I would ask you where you got that notion from? Certainly not from Scripture, nor the teaching of the historic Christian faith.

Also, if that sentiment were true, and God did separate the sin from the sinner, hating the sin and loving the sinner, then why does God assign that sin to the sinner and banish them to hell for their sin?

I am really curious as to your response.

Now, I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic, but loving thy brethren and sisters does not mean that you accept their unhealthy lifestyle.

There is no evidence of a disowning here.
