Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
Class? What a stupid statement!
Ever notice how the more degrees a person racks up the dumber they get ? They lose touch with common sense and reality.
Your colorful language leads me to believe you have a problem with people who try to promote religious morals. Yes?
Exactly. In my opinion, that is true love.
Indeed it is true love. Sadly, most want a false love that is dripping in sweet notions and niceties that overlook wickedness and wink at sin. They don't want the Jesus who is coming in Glory to Judge the earth in wrath, they want the "sweet Jesus", who is rather effiminant, blond haired-blue eyes and doesn't judge any sin.
I'd say that Alan Keyes has a proper understanding of Biblical love.
Read the Bible, fool!
Well, that would depend upon where they earned their degrees. : )
Christians in America no longer even hate the sin.
Alan Keyes is man enough to stand against a public and proud acceptance of sin even by his own child. This is because he probably believes he answers to God first.
Of course, you do not accept this kind of Christianity. Most Americans no longer want to condemn any sin. They want to forgive sin BEFORE OR, WITHOUT, REPENTANCE.
Maybe if a majority of righteous people began to condemn adultery, fornication, throwaway marriage, homosexuality and other sins, we might not have as much of it going on.
We all don't have to sink together to the lowest common denominator of sinfulness to show our "tolerance." Never to judge is to allow evil to run rampant.
If you want on/off the ping list see my profile page.
It's a tough call for Keyes as whatever he does will look bad, and Maya really forced the situation by going public. These things take time to work out. That's what the Cheney's had, and Keyes didn't.
Exactly. And when we do not confront the sinner with their sin, as prescribed in Matthew 18, we do them spiritual harm by avoiding something some find unpleasant, but allows the sinner to continue with the idea their sin is not harmful to them.
Why is it "disgraceful"?
Would it be disgraceful for someone to support financially a child who is a serial rapists?
True, it does depend on the degree. I have lots of respect for higher degrees in science and engineering.
If this is your brand of Christianity, I don't want any part of it.
Nowhere in the Bible will you find that sentiment. Nowhere. As a matter of fact, the Bible states categorically that God's hates unrepentent evildoers.
What you express is a popular notion by feel goodism religion that is in opposition to the Bible.
I have my own morals to live by, so do you. I don't care
what yours are, don't need you to preach them to me.
I can say that there is no human being on this Earth
that I hate, though there are some I dislike in various
degrees.
Many are holier-than-thou bible thumpers who spend their
entire life hating people they have never met.
To deal with such an issue is difficult enough, but to address the problems as it's being aired in the public arena must be so much more heartwrenching. The media could give a rip about the entire Keyes family. They're just using this as an opportunity to further their political agenda in painting conservatives as heartless hypocrites. I'm not buying it.
When I turned 18, I was out of the house and on my own. My parents insisted on it. I went to work, got an education on my own dime and talents, and never begrudged my parents' perspective and decision. Do you believe they disowned me? I don't. I believe they were just doing their part to ensure I became a responsible, self-reliant adult.
Maya Keyes is a headstrong adult. Her parents are allowing her to live as one. That's good and wise, not bad and unchristian.
I'm sure that was a tough call.
We certainly don't need YOU!
But then, you are most likely a demoncrap shill.
