Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
Don't "whatever" me! You don't know much about Keyes and when caught being completely flatfooted, you shouldn't attempt to crawl of of the hole you dug for yourself with something even sillier.
Alan Keyes is not a "leading Republican and rightwing pundit".
He is a pompous, bombastic, bag of hot air.
This is not family values. Turning your back and rejecting your teenage child is a loathesome thing to do. Condemn the sin, love the sinner.
But those arn't the same things, even remotely. It's one thing not to answer a question so the media won't beat on you for it, (i.e. Bush now answering the drug question, dodging specifics on Affermative Action), another thing entirely to lie outright (i.e. "I did not have sexual relations..."...blah, blah, blah, you know the rest) They are certainly not morally equivilant.
P.S. I just read this post, I don't know the context of the discussion.
Keyes has terrible political instincts and tends to preach.
Clinton was the biggest liar, spinner and evader I have seen and he won the Whitehouse twice. His wife is just as big a liar and spinner and she is an elected Senator. Obama is a marxist in the weeds and lies about it and still wins.
Honestly? It's because of things like this that I am increasingly convinced Sean Hannity was right.
I come here for news, and end up commenting sometimes, but it's usually worthless. Having reasoned, honest discussion is increasingly impossible around here.
Same here. But from what I've seen, most of them are "protected".
You'll find the same holds true for the "Porn is and should be protected as free speech", "Homosexual agenda", sponge bob, and the Simpson's threads. The Libertarians LIBERAL TERRORians swarm those threads like buzzards after road kill.
Huh? I think I've about had enough on this strange ride. I just don't understand this. It's bizarro. And I've never seen one episode of "Sponge Bob," or watch "The Simpsons." And since I don't cotton to being called a troll, I'll just mosey on....
Read Maya Keyes' own words quoted in post 33

She believes that her daddy is doing what is right, according to his and her mother's morals.
Actually, she sounds quite a bit like her daddy, doesn't she? No reason to back down from a definition or position just given because it's not popular.
Howlin, Ambassador Keyes had just made a strong (and clear, in my opinion) statement. If he had equivocated or Clintonesqued his way around it, the hypocrisy would have been pointed out. Even Maya believes that her parents held out hope that she would turn around until she attended the anti-Bush rally.
And I've never seen one episode of "Sponge Bob," or watch "The Simpsons."
Just use the keyword search for porn, Sponge Bob and Simpsons and read the threads. or the screen name "Kretek" this person said homosexuals spreading the deadly disease hiv/aids was as harmless as people passing along the common cold.
ROFLOL!
In certain circles, it's called "tact" or even "manners"...but part of Keyes' schtick is being a little too outspoken for that. His followers love him because he dares to say what no one else will. He also says it in a way no one else will.....
It's because of things like this that I am increasingly convinced Sean Hannity was right.
Well, not exactly. I think part of the reason Sean was annoyed is that Keyes & a couple of others aren't quite as adored around these parts as they used to be. As I understand it, Sean is good friends with Keyes' media director, who is a former FReeper.
Of course, we FReepers tend to be a bit like Keyes in calling them like we see them without regard for tact. ;-)
As for Maya, it appears that currently she'd like to be a political activist like her father, just from the opposite end of the political spectrum. She's right, probably no one would pay her any attention except for who her father is.
On the other hand, why should she complain? So far it's gotten her a lot of media exposure and free tuition to an Ivy League school. Not a bad start for a budding activist not yet out of her teens. Her parents might even be secretly pleased with the free tuition thing...
Read what SHE has to say about it. It differs from what the Guardian says. You don't know both sides of the story so don't be so quick to judge him.
I'd never vote for him either but that's neither here nor there.
You are most welcome, Peach.
Precisely incorrect.
He has not broken off communication with her. Read what SHE says, not what the Guardian has to say about the situation. You don't know what really went on any more than any of the rest of us. Whenever a Christian or a Republican does something, the media turns it into a big circus, full of lyin's. M
Nobody has disowned anyone here. I know there are people who do disown their kids (pregnant daughters, etc.) but this is not the case here.
Oh, and if all sins are equal, especially if "everybody's done it" then what do you think of lying? Cheating? And I am sure you did not condemn Clinton for his Monica & Paula escapades did you? You wouldn't be hypocritical about that would you?
