Republican disowns lesbian daughter
Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005
Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.
So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.
Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."
Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.
Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."
Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.
"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.
Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.
"WOLF BLITZER: Has there been a complete falling-out now between you and your father?
"MAYA KEYES: No. I love my parents very much. And they love me. And they disagree with what I'm doing at the moment. And, as such, they can't support me in this activity, but they are still always going to love me. I know that."
Keyes has apparently kept the lines of communication open enough that his daughter doesn't view this as a complete falling out. Again, his only offense is an unwillingness to fund a lifestyle contrary to what he believes is ethical.
Yes. I've noted that.
But it sounds like quite a few freepers are going to be disappointed that he's still speaking to his daughter. According to them, he should not be speaking with her because she's gay. I find that kind of thinking disgraceful.
May I suggest that DU might prove to be a less taxing experience for you and the conservatives that will have to no longer read your pro-homosexual agenda postings.
Ad hominems are not impressive arguments.
So why post one?
Read your own prior post.
After the thread has pretty much died out you come back and have spewed more nonsense... You have purposely avoided any Biblical references (that I have noticed) to back up your unfounded attacks. How about referencing your points. "Sounds like" just doesn't cut the mustard here on FR...
I have seen many great responses in debt on this thread, none of them seem to have originated from you. It just sounds like you can't back up your believes in my opinion. Twelve two lined responses in a row with no real substance does not equate answering to FR standards IMHO... It just makes it look like you are outclassed on this subject. No offense meant... just my observances...
AMEN to that.
I think Keys hurts the Republicans because he takes the faith too literally. Like when he said God choose him to run in IL last year. You can feel like that, but just just come out and say it. It'll freak people out. And it's these types of statements. He needs to quiet down some and move a little smarter, centered.
I wrote my posts -your homosexual sensitivies are noted; however, I they are in error.
And if you get this emotional over something, you should explore your feelings because you've done it to yourself.
LOL!
That's cute. So if one doesn't respond right away (perhaps you noted where I went out), and doesn't give Biblical references, then one isn't a good enough Christian for you. Interesting concept.
And I note your late addition to the thread, but that's okay, I'm sure.
I'll stand by my statements. I don't think good Christians stop talking to their child because they are gay.
And, perhaps you haven't noticed the transcript of Keyes daughter, but they ARE still speaking, despite the mis-reporting of this article.
So you should write to Keyes and tell HIM that he's not a good enough Christian for YOU. After all, he's still speaking to his daughter. And she's gay. It sounds like that would be your position. And you're welcome to it. Disgraceful a position though it is.
Is he really a leading republican? I never hear much about the guy.
He only became a "leading Republican" to the MSM the minute he spoke out against his lesbian daughter.
No, You have to be 100% Christian and Conservative, never denying or disagreeing with the conservative agenda, or your just considered a whining fence sitter! Some people on this forum see everything in the world as black and white. Those people are odd and very unhappy its sad really.
I agree with you and that's why, once I read the transcript, I've mentioned once or twice that perhaps they should write to Keyes and tell them how disappointed they are in his particular brand of Christianity.
Most of these so-called Christians think he should not speak with his daughter because she's gay. How disappointed they must be in him. (sarcasm)
I don't know what churches they go to, but in the Catholic and Episcopal churches, we don't stop speaking to our family members because they are gay. Although I'm not in love with the Episcopal church, after reading today's comments, I'll stay there.
One more time:
The exact quote "Spare the rod and spoil the child" is from Hudibras by Butler.
The big difference is that there is absolutely no quote anyone has ever given me that includes daughters or is at least gender neutral. There is also no quote that allows mothers to hit their kids of either sex.
Oh, and that "Spare the rod..." from Hudibras is in this context:
"Love is a boy
By poets styl'd
Then spare the rod
and spoil the child"
It was written by Samuel Butler to mock the Puritans, and even there addressed only hitting boys.
Gee, if they consider not paying for college tuition "disowning" my parents disowned me too.
