Republican Disowns Lesbian Daughter (Keyes)

Republican disowns lesbian daughter

Gary Younge Saturday February 26, 2005

Guardian When the leading Republican and rightwing pundit Alan Keyes was asked what he thought of Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of the US vice-president, he called her "a selfish hedonist". If his own daughter came out as a lesbian, said Mr Keyes, he would say the same thing.

So when Mr Keyes' only daughter, Maya Marcel-Keyes, declared herself a "liberal queer" at a public rally he lived up to his word. Her parents turned her out of their house, broke off all communication and stopped paying her university tuition fees.

Ms Keyes told a rally supporting gay young people in Maryland: "We have to figure out what we can do to make sure that during those times when it seems like everything in the world is turning against them, like everyone in the world is rejecting them, that they know there are resources out there they can turn to; there are people out there who will say to them, 'I care'."

Ms Keyes joins a list of gay people with rightwing relatives, including Mary Cheney and Candace Gingrich, the sister of Republican congressman Newt Gingrich. But Mr Keyes, a darling of the religious right, has been more outspoken on the issue than most.

Ms Keyes says her parents were "not too pleased" when she came out. "Things just came to a head. Liberal queer plus conservative Republican just doesn't mesh well."

Her older brother has offered her somewhere to stay and she has been given a scholarship to continue at college.

"My daughter is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. What she chooses to do has nothing to do with my work or political activities," Mr Keyes said in a statement.

Ms Keyes says she loves her parents and "totally understands" their position.

Nothing in the article matches the headline. There is nothing that says they have disowned her. They simply told her to start paying her own tuition and to find a residence on her own.

Sounds like tough love to me.

Watch myself about what?

I was making the point that there is only one type of sin that is celebrated, has its own parades denoting pride in the sin, and is politically protected.

Saying Joe was full of hate was sarcasm, he obviously is not. I think he understood that.

Try Matthew 18:17 and I Cor. 5:1-5 before you go dismissing the man's Christianity. He obviously knows more about Church discipline than you give him credit for.

Haven't seen these questions asked....

1. Is Ms Keyes financially able to support herself? It would seem that she does not. Her brother has offered her a place to stay.

2. If her brother had not offered her a place to stay, as he should not have according to some on this thread, is it Mr & Mrs Keyes' position that in the event their daughter was homeless, this would be considered "tough love"?

I was impressed by Mr Keyes initially..I watched his TV show...lsitened to him when he ran for the Presidential nomination. I was quite impressed with him. I am impressed no longer.

RE: "You say you're a Christian but your language and attitude says different."

Jesus did not order me to be a doormat for extremists. If I am angry with you, I will let you know in no uncertain terms why. It's the honest thing to do (and I don't believe in lying).

RE: "It's your type of behavior that turn people off from true Christianity if in fact you really believe you're Christian."

No, it's your kind of zealous, tent-revival huckster "Christian" that turns people off of Christianity. If non-believers are being constantly informed of how evil and disgusting they are by people like you, why in the hell would they ever want to set foot in a church? Do you know how many homosexuals have been led away from Christ by the bigotry and hatred they've encountered in traditional Christian churches?

RE: "God did not allow the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah to live in peace and harmony, and neither should we."

God did not give us the authority to decide what is Sodom and Gomorrah and what isn't. Judgement is reserved for He and He alone. You can witness to others as much as you desire, but God did not give you the right to strong-arm others int acceptance of Him. The living have self-preservation and the protection of their loved ones to worry about here on Earth...and Keyes failed the latter with bitter aplomb.

Self destructive behaviour in teens and young adults is not all that uncommon.

your parents hated homosexuals, your church preached hellfire against them, and your schoolyard friends used to rag on them. You think it's normal now for a man like Keyes to treat his own daughter like she was a dirty dog in the streets. She deserves to be ostracized because she's an evil, unrepentant sinner in your eyes.

I am pressed for time, so I have to excert your post to me... and just address a few things...

First, I only had my mother. No father past age 5 to speak of.

My church preached hellfire for all sinners, be it "lying" or "homosexuality". It pulled no bones that sin was sin and that all our works are like filthy rags to the Lord (who can't stand to look upon sin). Acting like something is not a sin does not change it. I am proud my mother help me understand that, yes. Sugarcoating sin does not do one any good. Rewarding sinful behavior with apathy does not help it one way or the other. Why do parent punish sinful behavior (at all ages)? They do it because they want their children to grow up to be as Christlike as possible. Hell is hot, I never want to see my children on that wide road leading towards it.

BTW.. Homosexuality is not a "PETTY" thing as you called it. It is a spit in God face. It is not a genetic flaw either, it is a lifestyle choise.

Unless you follow Christian doctrine chances are you will not understand or accept what Keyes did in relation to his daughter. No need to be insulted that's just the way things are and no insult was intended.

Christian parents have tough decisions to make when their kids sway from their Christian upbringing to the point of making painful decisions that look to be cruel to the casual non-christian observer.

Abraham was directed by God to kill his most beloved son to test his love for God. That would be considered a cruel test by the casual non-christian observer also. But Keyes has come nowhere close to killing his daughter and look at the reaction from so-called Christians and non-christian alike.

Never said that it was a flaw, but it is genetic.

".I suppose you wouldn't approve of excommunication from the Church of an unrepentant sinner too?" Poor analogy, IMO.

No it's not. It's the same anology that Paul used after giving directions to the Corinthian church to expell the immoral man in 1 Corinthians 5:11, as follows:

11But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner--not even to eat with such a person.

If Homsexuality is a disease then Jesus would love those afflicted like he did the lepers.
But it's not a disease, it's lust, and is condemned with all manner of lusts, and called to repentance.

If Homosexuality is a choice then Jesus would love those who sin like he did the woman at the well.
Yes, Jesus loved the Samaritan woman at the well so much that He did not "wink" at her sin, but confronted her with her sin of five marriages and divorces(God hates divorce too) and being shacked up with a man at the time. Jesus loved her so much that He called her to repent and told her to go and sin those sins no more.

Like I said, before you start spouting long New Testament based rants, it is wise to consider that the recipient of the rant may not be of the same faith as you.

I don't care what faith you are frankly. If you think Biblical responces are "smug" so be it.

I am afraid that most Christians forget that Christ was a man, not a woman... the shame of it... /end sarcasm...

Apparently a fairly strong man too. Strong enough to make a whip out of some rope and run the money changers out of His Father's house. But you would expect that from a construction contractor who worked with His hands. :-)

"Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him, for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple." (1 Cor. 3:17)
That's why you can't trot out that old "I'm OK, you're OK," '60s cannard. God is judging us on how we use or abuse our bodies, because that shows whether we worship Him or our own sinful flesh. Knowing this, Christians speak out when others have offended God. If a blind and deaf man is walking on a railroad track, and you see a train coming, the loving thing to do is knock him out harm's way. He may scream and be hurt in the process, but you have saved him. This is the responsibility of Christians who are called on to "love your neighbor as much as you love yourself." It's part of bearing the cross for Christ because you will certainly be vilified for speaking God's truth to fellow sinners. Obviously, the Church is failing horribly in this task today.

Would you please leave off the hyperbolic, hyper-emotional rhetoric, it does your argument no good at all. What it does is prove that your arguments are based on emotional subjectivism and not objective truth.

Ah, but remember, Jesus told the woman at the well, "Go and sin no more." He expects repentance and a life to show that repentance. He didn't pat her on the back and say, "Everybody's doing it, so it must be okay."
