Road kill candy angers animal rights activists

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- Animal rights activists are disgusted by a new candy from Kraft Foods Inc. that's shaped like critters run over by cars -- complete with tire treads.

The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy -- in shapes of partly flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels -- fosters cruelty toward animals, according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"It sends the wrong message to children, that it's OK to harm animals. And that's the wrong message, especially from a so-called wholesome corporation like Kraft," said society spokesman Matthew Stanton.

The society is considering petition drives, boycotts and letter-writing campaigns to get the candy pulled from the market, Stanton said.

Well, twisted or not, my kids would have loved these gummies... would still love them. Hope I can find some to save for their Easter Baskets or Christmas stockings. Shoot, one year I gave my son an Easter vulture. It got lost in an airport a couple of years later. He still grieves. He's 25. LOL

Yup. Hit her in the head, the body slammed around against my front left wheel. That critter was about seven feet long from tip of the nose to the end of the tail. Good thing I didn't hit it dead on front and center, for sure my airbag woulda gone and I probably woulda lost it.

" I know it's bad but if it angers PETA i want it!"

Even Peta is right; once in a while.

This has to be some Libs idea of a 'great' sales campaign.

I think it is unfortunate and disgusting of Kraft to go there; and would bet. . .it will be a 'road, not long traveled.

If they are smart. . .that is.

"Kids are morbidly curious and they like gross things. They sell this stuff in the shape of bugs and worms already. Trust me on this - there are more serious things to worry about."

It seems he doesn't care much for spirited debate. He ran away after a few posts.

Yeah, all the little ten year-olds are gonna be jumping into the family station wagon and cruising around, looking for kittens to run over. They're GUMMIS for Pete's sake. IMO, ALL gummis look like road kill, at least a little bit.

"What would be really cool is to see some roadkill PETA heads, complete with tire treads!"

My daughter suggested that, too

believe it or not, we are on an actual "road kill" committee......we get calls from either the state troopers or the wildlife agent about a deer or moose, etc that was struck down by a car, and we have permission to go get it, gut it, skin it, and prepare it to go to the local mission.....

the mission has its own butcher shop and they cut it up.....

the hides are taken to the local tannery, and the gloves go back to the wildlife group .....

such a deer hangs in our garage at this very moment.....

I agree with you completely. It is an idea made up by childish, sick, sadistic minds. The Lord gave us dominion over the earth and its inhabitants, but we are to treat them kindly and responsively. It is sick that some enjoy and laugh at the suffering of helpless creatures, which does not mean people who care for animals don't care more for the unborn that are murdered. This also does not mean we agree with PETA and their tactics.
One of the first characteristics of a psychopath is their cruelty to animals. Why encourage such behavior?

"What an idiotic, boneheaded thing to peddle to impressionable children"

Oh cut me a break. They've been selling stuff like gummi maggots, gummi worms and gummi worms in "dirt" (crushed chocolate cookies) for ten years.

Kids like 'em because of the "EEEEEWWWWWW" factor, not because they make them want to eat real maggots, dig up real worms or even go out and kill bears because the gummibears made them do it.

Amazing the number of people who overreact to the smallest things

"Yes they see it, and normal children feel bad for the animal, they don't make light of it."

No they don't, they want to look at it more closely. If given a chance, they'll poke it with a stick to turn up the critters consuming it. It's not abnormal behavior. This is how children first begin to encompass the cycle of life and death. In normal children, compassion is learned, not inherited.

Lighten up, just the kind of thing to chew on while having a candy cigarette. You can even pretend to shoot them with a Roy Rogers cap pistol. sounds like fun to me. I have a good chunk of skunk recipe, or maybe shake and bake snake is more to your liking.

We almost ran over the biggest darned porcupine I've ever seen in the road the other day. Luckily for us it was "almost". The sucker had to weigh 30 pounds.

That wouldn't have done your car any favors. And besides, I hear porcupine is a little to greasy to eat.
