Road kill candy angers animal rights activists

TRENTON, New Jersey (AP) -- Animal rights activists are disgusted by a new candy from Kraft Foods Inc. that's shaped like critters run over by cars -- complete with tire treads.

 

 

The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy -- in shapes of partly flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels -- fosters cruelty toward animals, according to the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

"It sends the wrong message to children, that it's OK to harm animals. And that's the wrong message, especially from a so-called wholesome corporation like Kraft," said society spokesman Matthew Stanton.

The society is considering petition drives, boycotts and letter-writing campaigns to get the candy pulled from the market, Stanton said.

There used to be 2 or 3 "Roadkill Cafes" located in New Hampshire. Everything on the menu was named for something you'd see driving around rural NH. I don't know if any are still in existence.

Until the rabies epidemic made it too risky - all the roadkill collected in New Hampshire was stored in refrigerators and auctioned off once a year. They ALWAYS sold out. Every year when the auction was held, articles would appear with recipes and stories how some "Yankee" would surprise his house guests with a delicious meal made from roadkill.

These PETA types are really hard to believe. You have to wonder what their parents were like. Of course it could just be a bad gene or chromosome. I'm just glad I don't have any in our family tree. At least not yet.

LOL! It is tastless but then I remeber being a kid and having no taste. Remember Wacky Packagers? I loved those! And Slime and Slime with Worms, and Slime with Eyeballs. I mean, slime is pretty much what's left after a bit of decay, right?

As an adult, I'm no fun anymore. I remember green ketchup made me ill.

I've seen cas in the wild, I even saw a small one in my backyard about ten years ago.

But I never saw one really up close. When I hit her, it was just the right side of her head on the very low rounded part of my bumper. Didn't even dent the bumper. I was shakin like a leaf, drove about 3/4 of a mile, stopped, settled down for a minute, and drove back.

She was lying on the yellow line un the center of the road, already lost about a quart of blood, deader than a doornail. I dragged her off to the side and a couple guys stopped and one took a picture of me.

That cat had huge feet and 3 inch claws.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Kraft Foods Inc. said Friday it would bow to demands by the New Jersey Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NJSPCA) that it stop selling candies shaped like animals that have been run over by cars.

The group publicly demanded removal of Road Kill candy, sold under Kraft's Trolli Gummi brand, earlier this week.

"This is not sending the right message to kids," NJSPCA spokesman Matthew Stanton said.

I grew up in a farming and ranching area. Butchering animals for food was routine. I didn't turn out to be a serial killer or someone who kicks small dogs for fun.

Oh. I saw plenty of road kill when I was kid and it didn't scar me for life. Grow up.

Kids are morbidly curious and they like gross things. They sell this stuff in the shape of bugs and worms already. Trust me on this - there are more serious things to worry about.

Save your children---don't brake for animals!

Just witnessed a two-car accident involving a stupid Chihuahua in the road. First car went off-road and hit a tree, the SUV behind her went sideways into the grass and rolled over. Turns out the wife was in the lead car, hubby and son in the following SUV. They lost both vehicles in 3 seconds, and could've lost their lives.

Braking for animals KILLS people. Avoid them if you can, but don't jeopardize others behind you, or yourself for a squirrel or racoon...and certainly not for a snake!

Funny you should mention raccoons. I was up at Incline Village, Lake Tahoe, today and saw one of the biggest raccoons I have ever seen. Unfortunately he didn't cross the road fast enough.

There was a MA highway supervisor that had a "road kill" effigy. He'd throw it out the truck in the
latter part of the day.

Calls would come in about a dead animal, so he'd get his crew together to go "clean it up", and wouldn't
you know it, it always past the shift, so everybody just "had" to put in overtime.
