Oh for goodness sake. A communion wafer discarded is "blasphemy?" That is so silly. You are taking offense at the wrong thing.
BLASPHEMY!!!
yes, but in a free society, bad taste must be tolerated or christians, oops Christians, are just as bad as taliban regimes... don't watch the show.
move on. pray for forgiveness from the horrible thoughts projected on the ignorant writers of a horrible sitcom...
Jesus is bigger than that and i am sure he has a sense of humor that is pretty good, why else would He come up with only ten commandments to get into heaven and still have people complain eternal salvation is hard to achieve... why else would He construct the most efficient self-sustaining biosphere in a way that its scientific inhabitants would think it was all happenstance... why else would he sanction marriage to last until death do us part so that both will be happy in heaven...
teeman
Even if one believes in the spurious doctrine of transubstantiation, the wafer doesn't become Jesus until the priest says it becomes Jesus. Until then it is just a piece of bread. It isn't blasphemous to throw away a piece of bread and it isn't blasphemous to throw away a wafer that may or may not have been used sometime in the future for communion.
Nothing NBC, ABC, CBS, puts on will ever interest me. I quit watching them a decade ago. They have nothing good on, and all the shows have a political agenda. I got tired of that and have never missed them.
Pretty disrespectful, but even if it's consumed as intended it still ends up in a toilet somewhere.
We should expect any better from these idiots?
"two non-Catholics are mistakenly given Holy Communion at a Catholic funeral Mass."
Mistakenly given?
I am not Catholic, but did attend a Catholic funeral a few weeks back. Those participating in Holy Communion had to step up to the alter to receive the Eucharist.
If this is the normal practice of the Catholic Church, in my view, it was not mistakenly given, it was "dishonestly taken".
As far as I'm concerned (forgive my renowned crankiness, but) the writers of this show can all go to hell. I will pray for them because they have no idea what their behavior has earned them, but I pity them if they get what is just.
Whoa...
Hollywood makes a statement:
"We will attack and mock Catholicism and Christianity at will -- with total impunity."
**"NBC has made a direct frontal assault on Roman Catholicism, choosing to mock, trivialize and ridicule the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ," Donahue added. "More than an apology is needed. This episode should be retired for good, and that is what we will demand.**
I agree with Donohue all the way. Hopefully this will be pursued in the media.
Now if that was a Koran the NBC would have stopped the show from running in the first place.
You think NBC would do a show on a muslim being slipped a peice of bacon or better yet a vegan eatting egg custurd when he thought it was tofu? You think producers would think that okay? SOME how I doubt it. They do this stuff for the ratings. Cheap tricks to pull another couple hundred thousand viewers for sweeps and neilsons.
Well when the letters start to go to those companies telling them we are no longer going to use their products we will get the standard....." We do not pick the shows our products sponsor, it is done buy a media buying group out of NYC blah blah blah ... thanks for your concern..."
What needs to happen is that we need to keep track of the WRITERS and PRODUCERS names that write this shlock and notify the studios that we will make sure no one watches these programs in the future as long as they hire these type of people.
With the internet this is possible by watching the trades and such. We are the consumers we are the ones with the power, we just need to wield it at the throats of the media.
NBC Show outrage and discussion of the Holy Eucharist.
How awful. Nothing funny about this. To Catholics-the Communion wafer, once it's been consecrated IS the body of Christ. This is a deliberate slap at Catholics, and all Christians.
I wonder if the next episode will feature characters flushing the Koran down the toilet? Nope that will never happen, only Christians are fair game for slurs and insults.
Is there anything that people won't be offended over. If you don't believe in the ritual, than it means nothing to you. It would mean nothing to me. And I am sick of people DEMANDING things. I don't care what side of the aisle it's coming from.
Many times these days, I just don't know what to believe. Many non-Catholics do not understand what that "wafer" is. Beware of those who just want to stir up trouble for trouble's sake. Keep your cool. God will sort it out.
NBC-TV SHOW ANGERS CATHOLICS NATIONWIDE
During the February 22 episode of the NBC-TV sitcom, Committed, two non-Catholics are mistakenly given Holy Communion at a Catholic funeral Mass. Nate, who is Jewish, and Bowie, a Protestant, dont know what to do with the Eucharist, so they make several failed attempts to get rid of it. For example, they try slipping it into the pocket of a priest, dropping it on a tray of cheese and crackers, etc.
At one point, the priest, who is portrayed as not knowing the difference between the Host and a cracker, goes to grab the cracker from a tray of appetizers; he initially balks when he discovers that it is the last one. Then he changes his mind, saying, Oh, what the hell. By far the most offensive scene occurs when Nate and Bowie accidentally flush what they think is the Host down the toilet.
Catholic League president William Donohue commented on this today:
Its been quite a while since weve been deluged with as many complaints as this episode of Committed fielded. To say that Catholics are angry about this show would be an understatementthe outrage is visceral and intense. The complaints have come from bishops, college chaplains, pastors and the laity, and they have come from all over the country. With good reason: NBC has made a direct frontal assault on Roman Catholicism, choosing to mock, trivialize and ridicule the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
What happened was deliberate. According to a January 2 story in the Cincinnati Enquirer, the writers for the series, Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline, have been encouraged by NBC executives to push the limits of comedy. For obvious reasons, the writers of Roseanne, Murphy Brown and Ellen chose not to push the buttons of homosexuals (or some other protected group), so they decided to play it safe and stay in good standing with their bosses by bashing Catholics.
More than an apology is needed. This episode should be retired for good, and that is what we will demand.
