Almost 50 percent of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief.
For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.
On Feb. 24, "Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs Seeing Is Believing" takes a fresh look at the UFO phenomenon. "As a journalist," says Jennings, "I began this project with a healthy dose of skepticism and as open a mind as possible. After almost 150 interviews with scientists, investigators and with many of those who claim to have witnessed unidentified flying objects, there are important questions that have not been completely answered and a great deal not fully explained."
"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs Seeing Is Believing" airs Thursday, Feb. 24 from 8-10 p.m. ET on ABC. The program will be broadcast in High Definition.
This two-hour primetime special reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms beyond Earth elsewhere in the universe.
The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, N.M., and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:
Minot Air Force Base, N.D., October 1968 Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.
Phoenix, March 1997 Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.
St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.
Today if you report a UFO to the U.S. government you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation that ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says in the program, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."
"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs Seeing Is Believing" is produced by PJ Productions and Springs Media for ABC News. Mark Obenhaus and Tom Yellin are the executive producers.
Oky, just went through the SETI bir. The usual strawmans about "We'll have evidence so we're better than ufologists!", which has nothing at ALL to do with what most serious ufologists do, which is look for evidence. Some clowns and con-men in ufology, yes, but not all, and I don't even think it's typical. But it doesn't keep the SETI folks from acting typically elitist.
Oops, back to the tape! Roswell!
Lots of mutilations have had virtually immediate investigation by skilled vets and investigators very thoroughly.
And, in every such case, the experts assert that they have no conventional explanation to offer AT ALL. They typically want to avoid as much publicity as possible because they fear reprisal of some kind. But they are adament that there is no conventional explanation.
When I invited my psych class to view the program tonight, one student stayed after. She had grown up on the farm ajacent to the farm where a cattle mutilation had occurred with--I believe a large craft--huge cigar shape, I think. I forget. Anyway--there were 8 cattle involved--typical organ removal and NO--ABSOLUTELY NO blood left in the cattle nor on the ground. None.
AND NO TRACKS of any kind other than the cattle to the site where they were abducted.
How would you explain that?
I would ask lots of questions. For example:
- How many people saw the UFO allegedly responsible for the mutilations? (Note that I'm granting, for the sake of the argument, that some mutilations occurred, although I'd probably press on that issue, too, if I were actually talking to the person reporting the story.)
- If there were witnesses to the UFO itself, were they drunk or otherwise intoxicated at the time?
- At what stage in the life cycle of the cattle mutilation story did this particular incident occur? That is, were cattle mutilations 'all the rage' at the time, were they all over the news and being talked about? (This bears on the issue of whether a few local guys and/or gals might have been motivated to mutilate some cattle in order to get their jollies and a little local press attention.)
That's just a small sampling of the questions I would ask.
My view, as well.
If there is intelligent life it MUST be elsewhere.
Thanks. Hope to catch up with you again.
Will see what I can find out. I have no doubt at all about the mutilation aspect. It was UFO ET and/or government with UFO type craft. Absolutely no other thing fits.
There were large His panic families on both farms, as I recall. They were not drunk at all. It was early in the phenomena. I don't know how much publicity.
I am a bit fuzzy on the sighting of the UFO. I may be mixing stories up on that score.
But even for your own mind, I suspect you have not begun to explain away NO blood and NO tracks to the site of the left carcases.
Cute.
Thanks. Cheers. Likewise.
Heading to bed shortly myself, I think. Tired.
(Rear, oblique, near an airfield where Raytheon has a facility, just before dusk.)

This worries me a bit, because just below this you write:
I am a bit fuzzy on the sighting of the UFO. I may be mixing stories up on that score.
If even you admit that you're perhaps mixing up stories, how could you possibly be sure that "[i]t was UFO ET and/or government with UFO type craft"?
I don't think you can.
But even for your own mind, I suspect you have not begun to explain away NO blood and NO tracks to the site of the left carcases.
You saw for yourself, or talked to multiple reliable eyewitnesses who reported, that there was "NO blood and NO tracks to the site of the left carcas[s]es"? I'd want some sort of proof of that this was the case.
In general, I try to stop myself from rushing headlong into believing things for which there's no evidence at all. I may not always succeed, but I'm always making the effort.
Best regards...
Just watched the Roswell segment. *sigh* A person doesn't have to be a "true believer" to know that the "Mogul" explanation doesn't cut it, and the producers couldn't bring themselves to touch the "high altitude dummy" mistaken aliens. I don't know what happened at Roswell, but the military STILL hasn't told the truth. It's really quite insulting.
Back to the tape...
Naw ..their explaination makes sense. What always gets me is that there has been 1000 different shapes to these crafts..Cigars, saucers, triangles..So..are people saying there are 100s of different alien forms or the same type with a million different shaped craft ....Just no HARD evidence as yet for any of it ...
I know my students very well.
And, as a therapist with thousands of hours of group and individual/marriage and family therapy under my belt, one has to learn some skills in assessing truthfulness or not.
And my professors and supervisors asserted that I was among the quickest and best they'd ever seen on those scores.
Absolutely right. The Mogul thing was an insult for sure. I was almost embarrassed for the idiotic Air Force stooges having to foist that on the public. What a joke.
A hideous joke.
