The UFO Phenomenon - Seeing Is Believing (Peter Jennings tonight - Live Thread)
ABC News ^ | Feb. 24, 2005

Posted on 02/24/2005 3:55:40 PM PST by traumer

Almost 50 percent of Americans, according to recent polls, and millions of people elsewhere in the world believe that UFOs are real. For many it is a deeply held belief.

For decades there have been sightings of UFOs by millions and millions of people. It is a mystery that only science can solve, and yet the phenomenon remains largely unexamined. Most of the reporting on this subject by the mainstream media holds those who claim to have seen UFOs up to ridicule.

On Feb. 24, "Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" takes a fresh look at the UFO phenomenon. "As a journalist," says Jennings, "I began this project with a healthy dose of skepticism and as open a mind as possible. After almost 150 interviews with scientists, investigators and with many of those who claim to have witnessed unidentified flying objects, there are important questions that have not been completely answered — and a great deal not fully explained."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" airs Thursday, Feb. 24 from 8-10 p.m. ET on ABC. The program will be broadcast in High Definition.

This two-hour primetime special reports on the entire scope of the UFO experience — from the first famous sighting by Kenneth Arnold in 1947 to the present day. The program draws on interviews with police officers, pilots, military personnel, scientists and ordinary citizens who give extraordinary accounts of encounters with the unexplained. Also included are the voices of professional skeptics about UFOs, including scientists who are leading the search for life forms beyond Earth elsewhere in the universe.

The program explores the facts behind the enduring mystery of the incident at Roswell, N.M., and looks into the strange stories of alien abductions. Among the UFO cases presented:

Minot Air Force Base, N.D., October 1968 — Sixteen airmen on the ground and the crew of an airborne B-52 witness a massive unidentified object hovering near the base.

Phoenix, March 1997 — Hundreds witness a huge triangular craft moving slowly over the city.

St. Clair County, Ill., January 2000 — Police officers in five adjoining towns all independently report witnessing a giant craft with multiple bright lights moving silently across the sky at a very low altitude.

Today if you report a UFO to the U.S. government you will be informed that the Air Force conducted a 22-year investigation that ended in 1969 and concluded that UFOs are not a threat to national security and are of no scientific interest. But as one of the world's leading theoretical physicists says in the program, "You simply cannot dismiss the possibility that some of these UFO sightings are actually sightings from some object created by … a civilization perhaps millions of years ahead of us in technology."

"Peter Jennings Reporting: UFOs — Seeing Is Believing" is produced by PJ Productions and Springs Media for ABC News. Mark Obenhaus and Tom Yellin are the executive producers.

Okay, I'll put away the tin foil. I for one would appreciate it if Quix would deliver something more concrete than his usual "you haven't worked with them as I have but I can't say anything" spiel.

I prefer to use logic. If you believe in God, and you believe that God created life on Earth, and Earth alone ...

The good Lord wasted a heck of a lot of time, energy and real estate on the cosmos.

Now, if we can figure out how to do something in 'theory', with some brilliant minds (Stephen Hawkings is my personal hero), then some other culture may be advanced enough to acutally do it

This stuff always gets me.

Professional shaman/conspiracists such as Graham Hancock exclaiming that it's 'arrogant' for humans to think that we're the only life in the Universe, and that, by extension, it's arrogant to not believe that Earth has been visited by sentient, superior beings from other worlds.

No, the argument goes something like this:

The odds are very good that there are other sentient beings, perhaps far in advance of humans in terms of technical and spiritual development. However, the distances (and the time it would take to cross them, even at the speed of light) involved are so incomprehensibly enormous (given the relative shortness of individual human lifespans) that it's effectively impossible that anybody has been able to do it.

Maybe, just maybe, airborne anomolies might be one-off top military aircraft capable of a performance envelope not generally accepted as being possible.

Maybe some of these craft are made of exotic materials and processes that are also done on a one-at-a-time basis.

Maybe some of these craft are automonous, and are capable of extreme manueverability that would crush a human pilot with tsunmi-like G-Forces.

Maybe some of these craft are 17 plus billion dollars apiece, a price the media would use to flame citizen outrage.

Of course, it might be a little more comfortable to say that we've been, uh, 'visited' by aliens, intelligent beings from Tau Ceti, who have mastered the science of faster-than-light technology with the specific purpose of dissecting Earth cattle, making funny pictures or obscene graffiti in Earth wheat fields and performing ad hoc anal/rectal exams on some of the locals.

The only downside is the amount of energy required is near infinite ....

No, the real problem with that is the escalating crude oil prices. I mean, how many barrels of oil would be needed to produce an infinite amount of energy?

I Believe in UFO's!
I would NEVER vote for KERRY!!
There is more truth in a UFO, than in one of Kerry's stories.

Me three. I'm just not convinced by the little grey alien stories. But I'll be watching tonight to see what ABC serves up.

Haven't any of you seen "Planet Nine From Outer Space"? You can watch that and tell me you don't believe in UFO's? Facts are facts.

This is Reagan's fault. If he had acted sooner and spent more money, it would not have come to this. Just more proof that he did not care for women and minorities.

There is also the possibility that one or more of the passengers on the airplanes on 9/11 were true liberationists from the future. A future where the jihadist movement created a global Islamic theocracy because nobody took the threat seriously.
Anyone who has read the Dune series of books is aware of the 10,000 year in the future, Dune universe where the movement has gone beyond Earth and through the galaxy. Perhaps this "liberation cell" of the future was able to change history by coming back, etc, etc,.
Perhaps the Final Crusade has been initiated?

They're desperate to boost their bottoming out ratings.

Desperate enough to round up the kooks and the curious.

Personally I don't believe UFO's or little aliens exist.

Can you please provide citations for some of this "quite solid" evidence? I'm sure the SETI folks would love to see it--it would save them a lot of wasted time and effort.

This is the future of Peter Jennings since the credibility of the MSM nightly news has been destroyed thanks to his liberal co-conspirator, Dan Rather. Peter Jennings doing UFO stories in now the equivalent of Geraldo Rivera and Al Capones vault.

Hodar,, I am still with you, we are on the same side.

If I told you ten years ago that there would be lipstick you could put on and it would stay on 24 hours no matter how much kissing you did, you would have laughed. If I told anyone 20 years ago that there would be mascara that would outlast the ocean all day long no one would believe me.
