"I saw the thread on Sr. Lucia's death a couple of weeks ago and saw other comments on how her death was a bad sign. Could someone fill me in on why? I'm not Catholic but my husband is and he had the same thoughts."

There are those who believe that Pope John Paul II will be the last "real" pope, i.e., that whoever follows him will be an apostate who will do great harm to the church. I read this some time ago, so I don't recall the details of where it comes from. And not knowing the specifics, maybe I shouldn't have said anything at all. But that's never stopped me before . . .

Had the good fortune to visit Rome last fall. In fact, was enroute to the Vatican when I heard the news that President Bush won the election. A beautiful day.

For anyone that's interested - Sky News has said that the operation is because the Pope is suffering from congestion in his lungs, and because of Parkinsons, he hasn't the muscle strength to cough to relieve it. Those who are less inclined to be charitable - the man is suffocating. It's a terrible situation. Be respectful.

A doctor on Fox said that about a half hour ago and made it much more understandable. This is routine. Thank you for repeating.

Amazing how a thread like this brings out the bigots. Should not surprise me, as I have seen it repeatedly on FR when it comes to the topic of religion, but it is quite disappointing.

I hasten to recall the Pope's very recent homily on the apocalypse. I wish I could find it. It was very chilling.

It was just the oddest thing. I had no clue he was going back into the hospital and when I woke up, I remembered my dream and I thought to myself how odd I would dream such a thing when I hadn't heard any news concerning him in the past few days. I turned on the TV and heard he was back in the hospital and I just pray my dream was not a premonition.

Prayers for his recovery if it is God's will. May the Lord bring peace to all who love and admire this man!

If the Pontiff's mission on earth is coming to end I shudder to contemplate what God has in store for us soon.

Well for every body it eventually is death and hasn't anything to do whether the Pope lives to 50 or 150
And if you are a true believer after that it is either Heaven or Hell

she said that the public usually takes a more dim view of his odds of survival than the Holy Father does

Because the pontiff has an abundance of faith of course. And this particular Pope has a lot of moxy too.

He's demonstrated before that he's a survivor, in Poland, his upbringing, the assassination attempt.

The Pope personifies what being a Christian is all about.

Oh, Really? can you explain that?

Threads like this, with the bigots and naysayers, are perfect opportunities to reinforce the need to be "better people" than they are.

They are simply reminders. Sometimes I'm grateful for them.

>I would pray he is right with the Lord before he dies. I wonder what God Almighty thinks of Popes anyway.<

No one knows. But I do know this. Pope John Paul II and Ronald Reagan successfully conspired to free Poland and Eastern Europe from murderous puppets of the Soviet Union. What would that be, about 100 million or so people, or even more if you count Russia, Ukraine, etc.?

Are those enough liberated souls, now allowed to live in freedom instead of under the yoke of Communism, to satisfy your brand of bean counting? Is that pesky ole Berlin Wall still standing? Does that suffice for your philosophy?

So, yeah. Two of the greatest servants of God and Jesus were President Reagan and the Pope. I have no idea whether the Pope will survive this. Yet Reagan's and the Pope's battle to engineer the collapse of European Communism should be enough to reserve for them one of the best seats at the eternal feast of Our Lord.

sometimes aggressive pulmonary relief measure like traches and vents are required to clear up congestion.

True. However, given the Parkinson's, his elderly age status, and frail physical condition, weaning him from a ventilator will be very difficult, and perhaps not possible.

They're all basically guessing because neither the hosptial nor the Church has issued a statement.

Fox has now changed their Terror Ticker to say "Pope MAY have Surgery to Help Him Breathe."

Whatever it is, he is not in the operating room.

Found it!

(AGI) - Vatican City, 12 Jan - The Pope commented today on the Apocalypse before the 7,000 people attending the General Papal Audience today in the Nervi Hall, indicating that the fight between good and evil, personified by Satan, is a very hard one, as shown by the manifold violence and injustice in the world today, however the outcome is certain, evil will be vanquished. Pope John Paul II explained, "God and the Lamb, Christ, surrounded by the 'Council of the Crown', are judging human history in good and evil, but showing us however the ultimate end in salvation and glory. The songs which are found in the Apocalypse and which serve to illustrate the issue of divine glory which regulates the flux, often disconcerting, of the tide of human events". Of great significance is the first part of the hymn intoned by the 24 ancients who seem to incarnate the chosen people in their two historic stages, the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles of the Church. The Pope continued, Satan, the original adversary, who accused our brothers in the heavenly court, has now been cast down from heaven and therefore no longer has great power. He knows he has not much time left because history is about to see a radical turning point in freedom from evil and therefore he is reacting full of great fury. And then the resurrected Christ will rise up, whose blood is the principle of salvation and who received from the Father royal power over the entire universe, in Him are centred salvation, strength and the kingdom of our God. In his victory are associated the Christian martyrs who chose the path of the cross, not yielding to evil and it virulence, but delivering themselves to the Father and uniting themselves to the death of Christ by means of a testimony of donation and courage which brought them to give up life in order to die". He concluded, "the words of the Apocalypse regarding those who have vanquished Satan and evil through the blood of the Lamb, echo also in the splendid prayer attributed to the Christian martyr Simeon, from Seleucia-Ctesifonte in Persia, 'I will receive life without pain, worry, anguish, persecutor, persecuted, oppressor, oppressed, tyrant or victim, there I will see no threat of king, or terror of prefects, no-one will quote me in court or terrorise me and no-one will drag me or scare me".
