Thanks, Ivan. I wasn't sure why a tracheotomy was necessary, but if he can't cough, that explains it.

I would feel as bad if it were Billy Graham on the brink of death. This Catholic loves and admires Billy Graham.

and because of Parkinsons, he hasn't the muscle strength to cough to relieve it. I figured that was a large part of the complication factor. Makes him more prone to developing lung related issues in the first place, as he can't perform good pulmonary hygeine like we all normally do for ourselves.

Condolences on the loss of your mother. It doesn't matter how old they may be when they pass, the loss of a parent is always heartbreaking.

would be EXTREMELY surprised if the Pope has not already given consent not to keep him on extraordinary life support. That was discussed on CNN; the people in Rome seemed to think that this would have been taken care of.
Note: I'm only reporting what was SAID; I have no idea what the Church's position on this is.

Pope John Paul I was the one who only lived a short while after becoming Pope. He took his name for the two Popes who preceded him - John XXIII and Paul VI as I recall.
Someone correct me if I am wrong - please.

She missed Pope John XXIII -- Pope John Paul I was the one that died after only a month.
I think it was Pope John XXIII who was referred to as "the smiling Pope," but I seem to recall the "peasant" Pope, too -- he did not disdain his peasant roots.

...and because of Parkinsons, he hasn't the muscle strength to cough to relieve it.That is precisely why I thought this operation was significant.

I know Howlin, we butt heads with them all the time. But really, this is beyond the pale. My God, this man has been an amazing beacon of freedom for the world and, with Reagan and Thatcher, was responsible for the downfall of communism.
For these bastards to piss on this thread is beyond belief.
I mean, is their own faith so weak that they have to kick a dying man who happens to lead a different religion?

I take heart from something that was said by Christina Odone, former editor of the Catholic Herald in the UK - she said that the public usually takes a more dim view of his odds of survival than the Holy Father does, who, no matter what, keeps battling back.

Oh geez ...
I don't think he's gonna be able to beat this
Sad news .. but thank you for the update

If the Pontiff's mission on earth is coming to end I shudder to contemplate what God has in store for us soon.
