The Florida Department of Children and Families has moved to intervene into the legal battle over the life of Teri Schiavo. Details of the agency involvement in the case were not immediately available.
The DCF involvement came hours after Florida Governor Jeb Bush told reporters that he would seek a means to intervene in this case.
George Felos, who represents Teri's husband Michael, criticized the DCF move, saying it 'reeks of the intervention of politics' in this case and is an affront to the court.
David Gibbs, attorney for Teri's mother and father, countered there were serious allegiations of abuse in the case. The Schlindlers have accused their son-in-law of mistreating his wife, Michael has emphatically denied the accusations.
Speaking at an afternoon news conference in Tallahassee, Gov. Bush said he was exploring options to block the removal of the feeding tube and called his involvement 'a work in progress.'
Bush said he had received tens of thousands of emails and telephone calls from supporters ecouraging him to keep Terri Schiavo alive. The governor said he is working with his legislative staff to see what can be done.
'People with deep faith and big hearts are concerned, as I am about the circusmstances that Ms. Schiavo is in,' the governor continued.
'I want them to know that I will do what I can.'

She won't do that, either. VERY frustrating.
If hubby was a decent person, he'd turn over responsibility to his wife's parents -- people who truly care about her. He's terrified, though, that she might become lucid at some point in time and let people know how she became disabled. Seems I heard it's a distinct possibility that he was trying to murder her, but the attempt failed, leaving her in this condition. Last thing he wants is for her to spill the beans.

If he had a good lawyer, he'd be able to argue that her testimony was not credible because her parents had been whispering things in her ear, yadda yadda yadda. But if it becomes too obvious that he's trying to kill her even when he can no longer deny that she's a sentient human being, that might be another story.
Exactly. Two separate domains. You're either in one or the other.
Only sometimes the people are not really dying, they're just very high risk with a cardiac condition or something.
Last year I found a study funded by Soros in which chronically ill children, from homes where money was scant of course, when in a crisis were sent to a hospice instead of a hospital. I was livid.
It was a New York pilot study, which included lots of discussion about how to get past the image associated with the word "hospice" (watch, they'll be renaming it shortly) and the wonderful part about the colored walls and parents being able to be with the kids all the time. No institutional atmosphere. Great. Except no real medical care either. So the kids died. It was supposed to be nice though because they didn't have to endure simple treatments that we would have done in a hospital and would have saved them.
Keep trying. Hugs.
I hope you're ill that we can't starve animals but we can (ostensibly) starve Terri.
I'd hate to think you're ill that we can't starve animals, period.
My deepest condolences. My mother was in charge of the decision, and because she had ignored my input before, I didn't say anything. I was there on vacation and had to return home. My sister fought the fight against the hospice and my mother (that my father be provided with food or water if he asked for it). He died within a few days...which is my only comfort (he was dying already). My sister is still not over it, because she literally watched him die. If I knew then what I know now, I would have been aggressive in my opposition. I'm so sorry for what you have been through.
I was reading on another thread last night the other horror stories of people in Terri's place who are being routinely murdered in this fashion...many of them perfectly able to speak their wishes (ehhh, so what?). Some were even capable of painting pictures, walking around, etc. These people are being MURDERED!! So, Terri's fight is not just for Terri...it's for all of the others out there...our seniors (what happened to respect for the Greatest Generation?), our handicapped (would Helen Keller be killed today?), or babies...our helpless. America should NEVER, EVER, *EVER* be a place where things like this happen! EVER!
BUMP
I think that's ok and perhaps what we might want too. For someone who is imminently dying and suffering, why not? If they have had time to discuss things and say goodbye...
For someone who is just mentally disabled, it's a whole new ballgame.
Repeatedly changing underwear?
Hallelujah!
ROFL! One can only hope.
**DCF involvement **
Interesting -- considering the poor job they have done for some children in Florida.
But we'll take all the help we can get!
ROTFL. THat is exactly what I was thinking.
That should have been shot down not because of this intervention today -- but it was Gov Jeb Bush who intervened a couple of years ago. It is just that our Judicial system is so out of whack it ruled the Governor's action then unconstitutional
Please note, little brother Jeb can pick up the phone and call big brother George and ask for a Presidential Executive Order to intervene or even a Justice Department probe.
Also, Jeb can call his father George H W and ask for his connections to help in this matter.
And he is getting hammered with calls.
In all honesty, he has two aces up his sleeve and two queens.
The aces are George W Bush [big brother] and George H W Bush [father and his connections. Then the queens -- the current First Lady -- Laura Bush, and the former First Lady [his mom] Barbara Bush. And his own wife Columba is Hispanic and First Lady of Florida.
I would keep up pressure on Jeb with perhaps a few emails and phone calls to the White House.
Your handle FormerACLUmember sounds like you might have constitutional and legal knowledge.
Let's just say -- do you have an opinion on the Freedom of Religion violation and the 14th Amendment being violated in this case for Terri's rights. Seems like something the ACLU should be fiercely fighting for [sarcasm].
