The news of Hunter Thompson was no surprise, considering the kind of person he was & how he lived his life. I can't say I was sad either; rather, I sensed the irony.
Here was someone who represented the 60s & 70s. His death to me foreshadows the direction all his cronies are heading. (Look at Abbie Hoffman.) His early writings might have been fun, but it was the drugs ravaging his brain that made the writing exciting. He paid the price. Not only for the debauchery, but for all the lives he screwed up.

I hope that we don't learn that this was a Vince Foster thing, and that somebody had it out for him. I would not at all be very surprised if a non-recreational drug of the Zoloft/Prozac sort was involved.
Long ago Hunter took out insurance against assassination or a drug possession frameup. But a death by his own hand might not trigger the dead man's switch he had put in place.
If I'm wrong, though, you'll be hearing about it, and it'll be interesting. Stay tuned.

I think Thompson was an unable whackjob who hated America and I could care less about his suicide. Worth repeating. Good riddance!
...He was enlisted in the US Air Force in 1956...and his high-jinks led to an honorable discharge after only a year in 1957.

Kind of ironic, two so very different "celebrities" died on the same day.
Sandra Dee, the epitome of virtue and innocence. Not many know that she was molested by her stepfather, and had a very controlling mother. She did meet and marry thelove of her life, Bobby Darin, but their marriage seemed doomed from the start. They had a son together. I think she really wanted to turn her life around for her son and grandchildren...but I guess if she did it, was too late.
Hunter S. Thompson, the epitome of rebelliousness and hardcore literature. I actually would not even have known who the man was, had my son not left a copy of one of his books around, and I read it. His brutal words shocked and disgusted me, yet they did have an effect.
I guess one could make the case that both could have overcome their "demons", but they didn't.
So very different, yet so alike.
Both tortured souls. Sad.

John F'n Kerry served also. And Benedict Arnold was a war hero. Your point?

I read a piece HST wrote shortly after the election. He was very despondent about Kerry losing. I believe HST even hosted a fund raiser for Kerry.
I'm waiting for the democrats to try to martyr him.

LOL Same here! Is the thread really even interesting though? I think I've heard of him but never cared enough to investigate his "works".

see? what a lame and even sickening thing to say about our President and the folks that work hard to protect the nation.
I'm sorry, I can find no excuses for this sort of filthy attitude . They can ALL go jump in a deep lake as far as I'm concerned . Unworthy citizens all.....

Freepers are an interesting bunch. There have been people on this thread who have met him which reminds me that there are so many of us from different backgrounds and we do seem to get around a lot. I probably shouldn't have labeled him a dem. It is funny that he hated Bush so much. I like my opposition coming unraveled to such a degree. Did he kill himself because of Bush? I doubt it. He sounds like he was a hateful person who decided one day to check himself out and off the planet.

I hope his kid didn't have to find him. No kid should have to find a parent suicide.
I can vouch for that. I found my mother dead on 5/7/96 from an apparent asphyxiation. Though alcohol was not listed as a factor, I knew it was---she'd been drinking heavily for years and it started locking her brain up. So, in a way, I knew she killed herself, even though she died in her sleep.
My prayers are for his soul but also for his family.

Was on a passenger boat and just disappeared off of it.
His family knew what THAT meant.

"Hunter S. Thompson, on the other hand, didn't interest me at all. IMO, his writing was trendy, not timeless."
An important distinction in literary criticism:
"...trendy, not timeless."
