My recollection of tpaine was he didn't have any style at all. Unless belligerent arrogance can be considered a style.

Its a 700+ reply thread. I had to get my 2 cents in on this charlatan who wrote while in a drug induced haze and then was hailed as some sort of genius by his America-hating, red diaper doper baby peers on the cultural left.

I think Thompson was an unable whackjob who hated America and I could care less about his suicide.

Worth repeating. Good riddance!

You got your "two cents" in earlier - spewing up on this thread and another one about Thompson.

You were probably one of the nutjobs who was celebrating after Christopher Reeve died.

There are enough posts on this thread to suggest that some Conservatives actually enjoyed his writing and that even many of those who didn't, nonetheless feel sorry for the people he has left behind.

Nutjobs celebrating when Christopher Reeve died? Have you gone mad? What else should I expect from a Chelea supporter?

Agreed--great book, great movie. Hell's Angel's too. Everything after the mid-70's was unreadable.

Oh, I don't know about that last statement. Try what may be his last article (as far as I know), written last Tuesday for ESPN...

You may not wish to attempt to find a job as a critic of writing. That one was lame.

H.S.T.'s early writing was brilliant.

I considered that. P.J. O'Rourke is very witty and I enjoy his work very much. But in the end I conclude he falls just short of the top shelf ( Where the big bunnies are). For a satirist to be a great satirist requires the ability not only to poke holes in the presumptions of the day it also requires they do it in a superb writing style. O'Rourke has the observational skill in spades. What he lacks is the technical and aesthetic writing skills to become one of the greats. Maybe that will change with maturity. I hope so. The Greats break new ground. The Good ones plow an existing field and raise a fine crop. I would put O'Rourke in the second category. If he worked harder at his craft he could well become a great one. ----

Great comments. I fear that money is too available these days to the successful writer. Many of the greats of the past were very poor when they were writing their best. Only after they died did they become "great".

If he had taken better care of himself he might have gotten another decade out of life. But it would have been a decade of spiraling deline and ignomimy. So he decided to "take arms against a sea of troubles."

I believe you are so right.

He had a compound?

Yes. Any dwelling with more than one firearm present is refered to as a "compound" in the media. I think it's a rule or something.

Sorry, that sounded kinda curt. I liked Sandra Dee, brings back good memories of my teen years.

She died from kidney disease and some other problems. Years ago I remember a TV movie in which she starred. It was pitiful. She could barely act, looked thin and worn...very much older (prob. from the alcohol and pills...mostly alcohol was her problem). I think someone must have been trying to give her a little break back into the industry. It never appeared again, and she was never seen again. Became a recluse.

The guy may have a desperate need of some prunes, jj.

;-)

People who talk like he has here on this death thread most likely have their own major problems.

Gotta love the concept.
A double bogey duffer, but a good skeet shot, could compete with Tiger Woods..

Sorry for the delayed reply, but I just got back home.

You're quite correct, and I certainly include myself in that "some FReepers" category; should've made that clear--I meant collectively we started flaming each other. But I should've pinged you to the post anyway so as not to leave the impression that I was trying to stir things back up on the sly--mea culpa.
