AP News Alert
ASPEN, Colo. (AP) -- The son of Hunter S. Thompson says the author shot himself to death at his Aspen-area home.
I think Thompson was an unable whackjob who hated America and I could care less about his suicide.
tpaine didn't have Hunter's style....
That decrepit dude didn't look so gonzo anymore.
I remember tpaine, but had no idea that was going on.
You are right.
But not all of us are going to blow our brains out.
Thousands of years ago, King Solomon, with all his riches, fame, and concubines, cried out that life under the sun was "Meaningless! A chasing after the wind."
But he concluded that there is a higher purpose that transcends our vain existence.
The tragedy here is that poor Mr. Thompson never discovered the purpose of his existence, as Solomon wrote of.
Or, if he did, that he rejected it.
See my #693.
I can't remember who it was that went down that trail.
Consistent true wit is rare. Lots of folks have the ability to gin up the occasional insightful ( I almost wrote inciteful) bit of wit. Dorothy Parker was the master of it. HST was another. Mencken, Twain, Bierce and a few others.Well, those you mention specialize in the "inciteful" as well, LOL. P. J. O'Rourke is on that list as well.

Thanks, and apologies for the spelling errors. I don't think she is lying, just couldn't find anything that named or spoke of more children than the one son.
I was in a class with her in Colorado a couple of years ago.
What about Tom Wolfe?
Add him to list.
"He didn't have a problem with Presidents."
I was referring to 'my own dear President'
Thanks for your kind words of support
HUNTER THOMPSON AT YALE. When I was at Yale in the 1970s, Hunter Thompson came to speak at some big media conference. He was to stay with the master of my residential college, which in addition to housing students also provided a very elegant residence for the master. The master had arranged for several students, including myself, to join him for lunch in the dining hall. We waited a good while in the master's living room, but no Hunter appeared. After about 30 minutes, the master went up to Hunter's room. Our master was a Boston brahmin type, fashionably liberal but exceedingly proper. He came down a few minutes later, looking somewhat pale, and told us that Mr. Thompson stated that he hadn't gotten out of bed yet, but that he would shoot some speed and be right down.

"Hopefully someone will write this on your tombstone."
So does that mean we have a deal???
I wouldn't waste the marker pen strokes on your tombstone.
I didn't agree with your assesment of HST but that was pretty funny. :)
