Somehow I wasn't surprised. I guess since I haven't read his books and only know of him by reputation I can't get all that excited. I'm sure the Left is upset. What I know of him, suicide is hardly a surprise. In fact "old age" *would* have been a surprising death for this figure.
There's nothing wrong with shedding a bit of decorum now and again to make your point but after a while it certain burns itself out. Plus most people outgrow that stage of their lives which I'd put around the teen-early twenties.
Still, it would be nice to see someone truly ravaging the Left, it's pimps and pillars, especially the morally bankrupt unions.

My theory is that men are afraid the carbon monoxide method may take too much time, and subsequently some innocent person may come by and stop them, leaving them embarrassed and mortified. But to me the shooting method is too messy (very inconsiderate of those coming by later). No one should have to clean up after such an affair.

Really?
I wasn't aware of that.
Supposedly, Darin was a vastly underrated dramatic actor, who never got the credit that he deserved.

Why did I know I'd find you on this thread? ;-)
I read Thompson in the 70's. In my opinion Hells Angels was his best work, some short pieces good too.
Saw him interviewed by Charlie Snow about a year ago, and he was barely coherent.
Sorry to dismiss him as another drug case, but he did it to himself, didn't he?

I met Bobby once. He was with his second wife who was an absolute beauty. I was a waitress in Newport Beach, CA. They came in for lunch. There was nothing fancy about them. I do believe then Bobby was suffering from heart disease.

My favorite Bobby Darin tune is
Clemintine. I'm sure that it would never be written-or aired-in today's hypersensitive, creatively stultifying, politically correct environment.

Not by me too! I have never read any of his "TRASH", and I have never seen any movie about his trash.

I have a few of his CDs. I'll have to check. I just loved his voice.
And Sandra Dee was so cute. That blonde hair and brown eyes. She did an interview about five years ago. If I remember correctly, she and her son by Bobby had a feud for a few years, and then they made up. Anyone who eats only lettuce for ten years has something wrong with them.
"What's for dinner tonight, honey?"
"Lettuce."

Hunter Thompson wrote some very entertaining stuff. He wasn't a great artist and he didn't say anything profound. That's pretty much how I see it, too.
He wrote in a highly idiosyncratic, era and incident specific style. When his current population of admirers has passed on, he will be read and studied by just a few obscure specialists at the college and university level. Even then, he will be cited in footnotes with greater far frequency than as main text. In the year 2040 and possibly much sooner, "Who was Hunter S. Thompson?" will be the Jeopardy answer that no one will know.
