why i'm a republican

Why would you ever be a republican?

That’s the question I’m most often greeted with when I “come out” to friends as a conservative. It’s a pretty simple answer for most, “because I think it’s right” or some such thing. Pundits would have us believe that republicanism is either the cure-all for a world gone painfully awry or a belief held exclusively by greedy fat cats with summer houses on cape cod who drive BMW’s. Well, I don’t think that my beliefs are going to save the world, I’m only a 16-year-old kid, and I drive an inherited Volkswagen. So why would I ever get mixed up in something that my mother views as worse than being in a gang? It’s not because it’s cool, I’ll say that much. Republicanism is not what it should be today, however, nor are politics. One cannot make a statement without people assuming that it’s for a certain, stupid reason. For example, When I state that I am opposed to gay marriage, I’m often called a “fag-basher” and just a straight up bad guy, however, The reason I’m opposed to gay marriage licenses granted by the state Is that marriage, or matrimony, is a sacrament of the church, and just as it is not the business of the church to interfere in the proceedings of the state, neither is it the business of the state to interfere with the church. Democrats simply don’t see that seperation of church and state goes both ways. Don’t see, interesting how those two words can be used to describe most democratic foreign policy. How don’t they see that once an ultimatum such as “Bring It On” is issued by our commander in chief, we cannot back down from it because it would give all requests and demands given by the United States no merit in the eyes of foreign powers, indeed, our demands would become so worthless they would eventually be ignored, and the phrase “the united states is all talk” would be on the lips of every single Islamic Terrorist, Basque Separatist, and Northern Irish militant. And where are we when we have a military but the entire world thinks that we’re such massive wussies that we can’t use it? We’re in a situation where we have to use it, and that would result in casualties far worse than the two or three thousand we are currently suffering in Iraq. The minimum wage is another example of democratic oversight. It would be great if we could force “greedy corporations” to pay their workers more without consequence, however, such a wage hike must be made in every country otherwise the corporation will simply move overseas. It’s quite simple actually, the best possible metaphor is water trickling down a hill, the water will go where there is the least resistance. If you think of that water as businesses, the businesses will go where they are welcomed instead of greeted by people who call them “evil” and “greedy”. To say that a business is concerned only with making a profit is an immensely true statement. To say that to have that concern as a business is bad is fundamentally stupid and ignorant, if the business doesn’t make a profit, then all of the people who work at that business will be eventually out of jobs. The words “don’t see” were used a lot in this paper. I think it’s clear to see why. The reason that I’m a republican is because the democrats just “don’t see” what’s going on and what is wrong with idealism. Ideals are good to have, however it’s good to realize what’s really going on. The republicans are the party of broken dreams and dashed hopes, however, it’s the party that I choose because I dream of temporary peace, and have given up hoping for a utopia.

You are not a Republican.

Republicans believe in the principles that made this country great, like:

Very nice job, young Mr. Ortel. I liked your water metaphor especially.

I didn't find out until I was about 22 or so, that paragraphs were good, or important. Now, you'll be like 6 years ahead of the curve!

Ignore the thread paragraph police. Once you first start posting it happens to almost everyone.

Thanks for the ping, cyborg.

Looks good, however "separation of church and state" is still a myth.

My family has been Republican since Lincoln. But the why was summed up best for me years ago when, during a relatively intellectual political discussion, a friend stopped, pondered and said with feeling, "You know what? I HATE democrats!"

Are you a Rep if you ae too young to vote? I am really old enought to vote Rep and I do, but I am not a Rep. If I voted Dem, I'd feel like a traitor, unAmerican and a Communist with Fascist tendencies. Personally, I'd hope my left arm would fall of if I pulled a Dem vote lever.

Good for you, wcgo2. When I was 16, I was clueless when it came to politics.

it’s the party that I choose because I dream of temporary peace, and have given up hoping for a utopia The problem with the whole idea of "utopia" is that it looks good on paper, but isn't compatible with human nature. It won't be possible until we, (the ENTIRE world) as a civilization becomes a lot more 'evolved' than we currently are now.

I completely agree, wc. Everyone here's an expert until they suffer the indignation having their writing critiqued at every corner. It gives you a unique persepctive.

All in all. A good job.
