WASHINGTON - Fancy state dinners aren't all the new White House chef will need to do the Bushes are looking for someone who knows barbecue and other good old American fare.
Laura Bush told Newsweek she doesn't expect that any of the celebrity chefs with books or television shows will be interested in becoming head chef at the presidential home. But she's looking to fill the job with someone who "can really showcase American foods."
The previous White House chef, Walter Scheib III, has left to pursue new opportunities after nearly 11 years of cooking for two presidents, and the first lady is looking for a replacement who can cater to the first family's native Texan pallets.
"We like spicy food of all kinds," she said in the magazine's Feb. 28 issue. "We like, obviously, Tex-Mex and barbecue. ... George is a very good eater."
The chef will have ample opportunity to make dinner for the first family the Bushes are known for staying in most nights rather than socializing like their predecessors. Laura Bush said they do go out to friends' dinner parties when someone thinks to ask them.
"We don't actually get invited to that many dinner parties," she said. "I think people think we're going to invite them, which we do."
I could do weekends :o) bet they'd love my cowboy beef stew with jalapeno cornbread...
I'll plan on having another one and I'll send them an invitation. BUT, they also have to listen to our mission presentation. Would you like to come?

Well, looking at your website, your family looks like you would be fabulous, interesting dinner hosts. I'm afraid both Auburn, Alabama and Southeast Asia might be a bit far. It looks as though you do fabulous work, God bless you in your mission.

Can you believe that tripe was on the front page?! Just listening to those whiney liberals made me puke. The non-political woman chef who expressed interest should get a chance to interview, IMHO. She had the right attitude. Wouldn't that make the DNC look foolish again? Another first for a woman in power due to a Republican Administration.
Oh well, maybe the White House will hire Doug from Doug's Fish Fry in Skaneateles, NY. He's the restaurant owner who dissed Hillary and Bubba when they visited. I'll bet that guy knows bar-b-que or could learn it quick. What a hoot.
Another name for pinto beans.
Recently, I've discovered Anastazi (sp?) beans. A speckled purple & white bean with an 'eye' like a black-eyed pea.
Tastes like a pinto, but with a richer flavor.
You guys are making me hungry too. I'm gonna go make dinner.
I just thought of something else. I was at the supermarket at noon, already getting things for Laura and George, when I realized I hadnt eaten breakfast; and it was already lunch. I purchased something called an empanada which is a smallish light yummy pastry filled with chicken or beef. This would be good with cocktails. Also, they costs $.30 apiece. Maybe I can cut them in half.
Your kind words are appreciated. We're trying to interest those who want to partner with us so we're going to give them a taste of the national food and then let our guests hear about the work. If you think you're ever going to be near us, let us know and we'll rustle you up some grubs.

Best wishes, my friend! After you get out of culinary arts school, you might want to work a few years in New Orleans. Some of the best food in the world can be found down there. That's where Emeril really fine tuned his skills. I just wish he would do more Creole/Cajun dishes on his TV shows.
Don't look at me, I've had them over at least half a dozen times. They'd be nice guests if they just didn't pore Picante Saurce from a bucket all over their food. Dessert, salad, you name it, they slop hot sauce over everything and it's hell on the tablecloth, napkins and carpet.
Well, thats why I use paper tablecloths and napkins. I also spread newspapers between the chairs and the rug. Thank you for the heads up.
I entertained a gentleman caller of Polish extraction and fed him pork chops & pierogis, among other things. He was delighted with the meal and asked me what the dumplings were. I couldn't believe that his mother hadn't made him pierogies and he didn't know what they were!
I love pierogies of all kinds, and I'm of the colored gal extraction myself.
