Anti-war Counter-protest, March 19 - 20, 2005
2/20/05 | RedFox

Posted on 02/20/2005 1:42:02 AM PST by conservativeimage

Will there be an anti-war protest in Denver on March 19 and 20, 2005? - the anniversary of Operation Iraqi Freedom - If there will be, I am willing to plan a FR counter-protest for Saturday the 19th. The main thing I want to do is publically replay Colin Powell's U.N. presentation on Iraq from a 24 inch TV and loud speakers from my car. Any other demonstration ideas are welcome. Please write me at FR, or contact me from my web site www.conservativeimage.com to notify me that you would like to participate. If I don't get enough response, I'll forget it and let the country be taken over by marxist hippys. If you would like me to make a WMV or MPG movie of Colin Powell's address to the U.N. available on my site, write me.

I agree, if we organize a protest we should invite the ProtestWarriors and other groups that agree with our point of view.

Pardon my thinking out loud, but is that really relevant? Wouldn't it be better to do something emphasizing that, in opposing prosecution of the present war, the "anti-war" protesters are abetting a brutal and illegal insurgency?

IOW by playing the Powell footage you'll be making it about the first war, the (as the left would have it) "illegal" and "preemptive" "invasion" of a "soveriegn" state, etc. The left's case is weak enough there, but it's weaker still wrt the present war, where the illegality and aggression is on the side of the insurgents, attacking a government -- the Iraqi Interim Government -- recognized as sovereign and legitimate by the U.N., the Arab league and hundreds of other nations.

Don't make it about what happened two years ago. Make it about the left supporting mass murders, suicide bombers and decapitators right now.

The most popular liberal argument is that "there were no WMD's" and that Bush lied. This is why I wanted to replay the Colin Powell address - especially the part:

``We just have a small question about this committee that is coming with Mohamed El Baradei.''

``We have this modified vehicle. What do we say if one of them sees it?''

``You didn't get a modified. You don't have one of those, do you?''

`I have one.''

``Which, from where?''

``From the workshop, from the Al Kendi (ph) Company?''

``What?''

``From Al Kendi (ph).''

`I'll come to see you in the morning. I'm worried. You all have something left.''

``We evacuated everything. We don't have anything left.''

Colin Powell's 2003 report completely refutes the arguments coming from the left today about the war.

Make signs with quotes from the ex-chief of the Romanian secret police, Ion Mihai Pacepa:

http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=10111

...particulary the part where he explains what "sarindar" means.

Also mention that all the intelligence agencies throughout the world agreed with the U.S. assessment of WMD in Iraq and that if any disagreed, why didn't they stand up and say so, especially after Powell's presentation.

* THESE TWO POINTS ARE CRITICAL *

Conservativeimage.com, don't give up without countering the leftists.

If you can even get a few out there with you, do something to counter-protest the left. Ping other Colorado FReepers and use the CO message board.

The left have abandoned their previously planned major effort in DC, at least partly because DC Chapter FReepers showed up to counter them everytime. Now some of us are traveling the 300 plus miles to Fayetteville because the left has set that as their primary East Coast protest.

Below are a few threads that may be of interest to you including info about the left's CO plans and some ideas on countering the various leftists' rallies.

[UPDATED FROM AN EARLIER POST. LEFTISTS ARE TIMING THESE TO THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE START OF OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. ALL EVENTS ARE ON SATURDAY, MARCH 19 EXCEPT WHERE NOTED. I've reformatted, left out some irrelevant info, and added emphasis. I will post rally info from another leftist group below on this thread. Check relevant leftist websites in case their plans change.]

[snip]

COLORADO

Denver
EVENT: Gather at 1pm at the west steps of the state capital building.

[Location: Colorado State Capitol Building (west steps) corner of Colfax & Sherman (200 E. Colfax) Denver CO]

[snip]=====

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Organize a counter-protest of the anti-war protestors emphasizing support for our country, our troops, and our President. Alternately, organize a "support the troops" rally to take place on the same day and in the same city as the anti-war rally nearest you. Or, attend a counter-protest or support troops rally already being held.*

The troops are fighting over there. Surely, you can give up a day or two of your free time to organize, support, and attend a rally to counter the hate-America first crowd.

HOW: Some suggestions:

Call the local police and ask about requirements for permits, restrictions on protest sign size and materials, and other laws involved in protests. In many locations, no permit is needed if you are going to be under a given number such as 25 people.

Plan an event. If possible, try to get a location across the street from the leftists or otherwise close, but not too close, to them. Try to have some barrier such as a street, hedge, or fence between them and your group IF you think it's necessary to control interaction between the groups and the police are unlikely to be deployed in numbers between the groups.

Publicize the event by starting a thread about your local Rally/Counter-protest.  Contact other FReepers in your area by pinging them to the thread and using the state message boards. (Click here, then on an appropriate state message board. From there, you can locate some adjacent FReepers by clicking on the "[New Prototype -- Click for Members List].")  Contact local veterans' organizations, GOP groups (especially College Republicans), Young Americans for Freedom, and all other groups (e.g., Second Amendment groups) that are likely to support our side.

Send out press releases to local media and contact local talk show hosts, especially conservative ones, who may be willing to promote, attend or speak at the event.

Make sure that all of your people know that the point is not to interfere with anyone else's rights, but to emphasize support for the troops and their mission. Give out or at least publicize rules for protesting such as DC Chapter's rules for protesting, especially if you have a few who might be overly zealous:

No violence, no threats, no profanity, no racism, no law-breaking.

Law enforcement officers must be treated with respect.

Stay out of the street at all times, except when using a crosswalk with the traffic light.

Do not block the sidewalk to pedestrian traffic. Keep your signs from hanging over into the street.

Do not block the signs of, nor get within 10 feet of, our opponents. Do not interfere with any media coverage of them. Our First Amendment rights are their rights, too.

Any arguments should be at 10 feet away to avoid conflict arising from passions on both sides. If you choose to get close to them physically, do so in friendship as fellow Americans only.

Do not give the middle finger, call people jerks, tell them to go home or get a job.

Take the high road. Be civil, but resolute, when you are cursed at or given the middle finger; point out the rudeness of the leftists by chanting, "Mean spirited arrogant condescending liberal."

Bring lots of American flags.

Have fun.

WHY: What good does a rally or counter-protest do?

Gets out a message to our troops that we support them.

Allows you to peacefully express your point of view. Much better than kicking in your TV when the leftists come on.

Upsets the leftists and demoralizes some of them. Prevents them from getting a free ride in the media.

Once again, busloads of leftist activists will descend upon Fayetteville, NC in an attempt to demoralize the will of our American troops by targetting their loved ones with antiwar drivel.

The choice of Fayetteville, NC, as a focal point of their propaganda campaign, is due to the fact that it is the home of Ft. Bragg (and the 82nd Airborne) as well as the Pope Airforce Base. The leftists will march with socialist banners and bring out an array of speakers decrying the war and advocating every variety of left-wing topic from Marxism and socialism . . .

Conservativeimage.com, I agree that Powell's address was compelling, but I agree with Stultis that playing it at a counter-protest is probably not the best strategy.

Unless you have a mass sound system with a huge 10 feet or much larger screen, showing anything like that at a public rally will not catch the attention of the crowd. And you sure don't want to rent expensive equipment to try to play that video to the leftists, who are likely to damage or steal your rented equipment given half the chance.

I applaud your efforts, but think that you might want to try a simpler message, something that will fit on a sign. Then, you can have a more detailed handout emphasizing detailed points for the press or others.

You could include quotes from the Powell speech, but it is somewhat dated. Also, it gets back to the left "no WMD" litany of leftist lies.

I suggest trying something like the following, which points could also be emphasized in short letters to the editors of your local papers, starting about a week before the protest and after the protest, pointing out that:

"For over a year, the lead group in these anti-war protests, ANSWER, has included on its website the statement that "the anti-war movement here and around the world must give its unconditional support to the Iraqi anti-colonial resistance." ANSWER's leaders are not really anti-war. They just support the side fighting America. They support the people blowing up our troops in Iraq, beheading American civilians there, and intentionally killing innocent Iraqi civilians, including those on their way to vote."

Finally, somebody has got something. Nearly 2000 views on this post and no collaboration! I'll go if somebody else will. I can contact the media if we can get something going. Have you checked my bumper sticker designs at conservativeimage.com? Do you think any of those messages are good for posters? I can redesign any of them to poster format and upload them to my site quickly. You could then go to kinkos, have them download one and print it off on poster board for a professional look. That shouldn't cost much. I can make a Freeper design...

Conservativeimage.com, I think the following bumperstickers, from among your website, are the type of theme that would, IMHO, be appropriate for signs at the counter-protest:

"Bringing the troops home . . . " nice, maybe a little long?

"Who says they're not capable of democracy?" Very powerful.

"Supporting the troops means supporting the war." Well said.

Putting "www.FreeRepublic.com" in smaller font at the bottom of signs is a very good idea. Also, putting an American flag on the signs is something to consider, especially if you don't want to carry U.S. flags all the time. Still, it's a good idea to have some American flags to distinguish your group from the leftists.

Sometimes, I've taped a straw to the top of a sign and then taped a small U.S. flag on 6 to 10 inch sticks into the straw. From a distance, people will see that you're supporting the troops and the effort to win the war. The flag really stands out and people won't assume that you're on the leftists' side, as they might otherwise if they couldn't read your sign.

I'm pinging weldgophardline and trteamer to this as they conducted a FReep of Hillary in Denver in 2003. Maybe one or both of them would want to join you, provide pointers, or put you in touch with other FReepers who could attend?

I'm fitting my '69 VW Bus with a loudspeaker PA system. I will definitely test it before I go down town. The Bus has a moon roof which slides open, and 4 maybe 5 people can stand up through it and wave signs. I'd like to meet in a parking lot down town around 12:30pm then motorcade past the capitol building where the lefties will be gathered at 1pm with "Stars and Stripes" blaring from the speakers on top of my car. Then we can pull into a different spot and make speeches from the top of my bus with the PA system. Do I have to contact the city or the police to let them know what I'm planning?

The purpose of this event is to honor our military, support the war and President Bush. I want to do a speech making points from Colin Powell's address to the UN, President Bush's freedom speeches, a piece I'm writing mocking liberals and the concept of "change is good, until it gets hard." I'd like to read out loud the transcript about Captain Sims who died in Falluja.
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1289883/posts

I'm redesigning some of my bumper stickers into large posters. I have to upload them to my site, then go to kinkos, download them there and make sure they're the right size so that other people around the country can do the same at their kinkos. I'll make a link to the posters on my site when they're ready, then post another thread for them on FR.

I'd like to play "I'm Proud To Be An American" and the national anthem from my loud system, but I'm not sure its lawful to play copyrighted CDs. This is a nonprofit, public demonstration, so I'm not charging anybody money to hear it, and I think that's the major concern about copyrights. Do you know anything about that?

Are you sure that a '69 VW can be used to counter a peace demonstration? I thought that those vehicles only worked when used to support the peaceniks. :)

It's a good idea to check with the police in advance. You'll have to check with them about permit requirements. In many cities, using electronic amplification does require a permit and there may be special rules about rolling sound trucks or vehicles.

Even if permit is not required, it's a good idea to let the police know in advance what your plans are. Then, check in with officers on the scene. Emphasize that you will comply with the rules and the police, that you are NOT looking to fight the leftists, but that you just want to peacefully counter-protest and support our troops and our country.

You and your car may be subject to eggs or worse from the left, but retaliation may get you arrested. Police, like basketball referees, often don't see the original push, but only see the retaliation.

Depending on the noise level, the playing of speeches or detailed comments from you may not be audible and understandable by others.

In close quarters with leftists, short positive chants/rants such as "USA, USA," "support our troops," "W won, get over it," "U.S. freed Iraq, Saddam's in jail" and biting chants/rants such as "swim to Cuba, free healthcare, free education, swim to Cuba, it's a socialist paradise, swim to Cuba," "Saddam needs a hug," "you never protested Saddam's killing fields and mass graves," "shame, shame, shame on you for supporting tyrants and terrorists," etc. are much more likely to get through to people than regular speeches. Of course, if the ambient noise is low and the bulk of leftists are futher away, a speech might be audible to people, especially those open to your ideas.

Playing patriotic songs is a good idea, but I haven't explored the copyright issues in detail. DC Chapter has not had a problem, but that's not a guarantee. I doubt that you'd have a problem.
