Condi to replace Cheney next year? Report: Vice president likely to step down 'due to his health'

Vice President Dick Cheney likely will step down next year due to health reasons and be replaced by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, according to a report by geopolitical expert Jack Wheeler.

On his website, To the Point, Wheeler reports there's a "red-breasted rumor bird" flying around Capitol Hill that has whispered the same thing to most congressional committee chairmen.

"We all know that Dick Cheney has been the best vice president of modern times, perhaps in American history," one such chairman told Wheeler. "And we know that he absolutely will not run for president in 2008. Further, he has an unfortunate history of heart trouble. So let's just say none of us will be surprised if, sometime next year, he will step down from the vice presidency due to his health."

Continued the source: "Should this happen, President Bush would need to appoint his replacement, just as Richard Nixon chose Gerald Ford to replace Spiro Agnew. It is quite clear to us whom the president would choose should he need to: Condoleezza Rice."

Wheeler goes on to analyze what such a scenario would mean for the 2008 presidential election.

Writes Wheeler: "Being a sitting vice president places Condi in an impregnable position for the GOP nomination in 2008 and sucks every breath of wind from Hillary's sails. Historically, it's hard for a party to keep the White House after they've had it for eight years. This is George Bush and Dick Cheney's way to buck history – and make it."

Serving as Bush's national security adviser during his first term, Rice took over the State Department last month.

"If this happens, the Dems will go nuts. For that reason, I would love to see it."

No, they would just say Karl Rove is the real President. Oh, wait, they already said that.

Do you honestly believe our enemies think Condi is weak? As for your niece, are you going to tell her she can be anything she wants, except President, because that would make our country appear weak to our enemies?

But I fully believe that the election of a woman to the highest office in the US will be seen by our enemies as nothing more than a big "Kick Me" sign. One which they will most happily oblige.

The same thing was said about GWB in 2000. Our enemies are going to hate us no matter what we do- or who we elect. I'd rather have a strong, confident and intelligent woman leading our country than a limp-wristed, indecisive, pansy-ass liberal guy anyday.

Doesn't O'Reilly have a column there? I know he is a strong advocate for a Condi/Hillary 08 match up, and thinks Condi would win in a blow out.

"This scenario makes sense but there's one fly in the ointment. Condi's never been elected to office. Is there a precedence for someone (besides George Washington or maybe one of the very earliest Prez's) being elected with no previous elected office?"

Not since Eisenhower. There are quite a few former military officers who came in that way (Scott, Grant). Also Jefferson, who was not military.

coming from a country that had a woman Prime Minister

Without Ronald Reagan as the leader of the free world Mrs. Thatcher would have had a pretty tough go of it. For all her merits, she ain't no Winston Churchill.

GIVE IT A REST!

Cheney is the man, and he's there to stay.

Do the names Margaret Thatcher or Golda Meir ring a bell?

Do you honestly believe our enemies think Condi is weak?

I believe that they will see the entire country as weak. They already know that the rat faction is.

The same thing was said about GWB in 2000.

You're memory is failing. The rats saw him as a hawk and a cowboy.

Our enemies are going to hate us no matter what we do- or who we elect

Their hate is expected. Their perception of the US as weak is intolerable.

I'd rather have a strong, confident and intelligent woman leading our country than a limp-wristed, indecisive, pansy-ass liberal guy anyday.

A strong Conservative alpha male is a much better option than either of your two choices.

As much as I like Condi, I don't want Cheney to step down. I'd be open to her being the GOP candidate in '08 but I'm pushing for Duncan Hunter.

Andrew Jackson had been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and (by the state legislature) to the U.S. Senate (twice), and was also elected to the Tennessee Superior Court (by the state legislature).

William Henry Harrison had been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and to the Ohio Senate, and also (by the Ohio legislature) to the U.S. Senate.

William Howard Taft never held elective office before being elected President.

Calvin Coolidge became President when Harding died in office...he never ran for President except as the incumbent in 1924.

Without US backing their enemies would have eaten them alive.

Hoover's only elective offices before the Presidency were class treasurer and student body treasurer when he was an undergraduate at Stanford University. His relief efforts in Europe began early during WWI, not after the war ended.
