Vanity: Please help with my kid's science fair project
T MInus Four

Posted on 02/17/2005 6:49:41 PM PST by T Minus Four

My seventh grader is doing a science fair project involving "handedness". She needs a larger sample for her data. If you would like to help, please do the following: clasp your hands together with your fingers intertwined. Report which thumb is on top and if you are right or left handed. Thanks for your help! Standing outside the grocery store didn't work, even with tootsie rolls as a thank you. People were too afraid we were selling something!

No, my sister's toes are situated that way, I noticed it one summer in a drug store and began hysterically laughing.

Come on. Interwine your fingers at the palm like you're doing the old "here's the church, here's the steeple" routine. No way your thumbs collide and can't figure out who wins.

Right-handed, right thumb on top. This is subject to change if my hand gets near the cat when she's in one of her moods.

FYI, I found this in the alt.lefthanders FAQ:

Q07. Is there a quick test to determine handedness?

No, there is not. In fact, the only sure way to determine brain dominance is to anesthetize one half of the brain and then see what functions are still handled by the still functioning hemisphere. There have been interesting results obtained, such as people able to respond to visual cues but not verbal cues. I don't know about you, dear reader, but I am not willing to submit to this test just to definitively answer the question.

However, you can try this: Sitting comfortably, fold your hands together and notice which thumb is on top. Lefties will have the right thumb on top.

Readers should note that this test is not completely accurate. We have heard about a significant number of lefties on alt.lefthanders who fail this test. Readers should also note that hand preference is usually not evident until children are age 4-6. Some children have been known to exhibit a preference as early as age 2.
