If you watch a lot of cable television, you've probably seen the ads, especially late at night or early in the morning. The "Girls Gone Wild" videos promise to show you coeds behaving badly on the beach during Spring Break or getting down and dirty at Mardi Gras. The formula is simple: find a group of nubile young things drunk out of their heads and induce them to pull up their T-shirts or pull down their shorts and expose themselves to anyone willing to fork over $19.95 for the privilege. The most recent incarnation features gangster rapper Snoop Dogg hawking fresh, young flesh.
Call me old-fashioned, but I just can't imagine what these girls were thinking when they agreed to "show off their assets," as one knock-off video boasts. These young women aren't pros -- they are not part of the pornographic underworld -- but ordinary teens and twenty-somethings who one day will be wives and mothers. One young girl, who was 17 at the time she allowed herself to be photographed topless, has already sued the producers of "The Guy Game," a video game featuring females in various stages of undress. Her suit claims she did not give a "valid or enforceable consent or release" for photos to be used by the video game makers. "Plaintiff is still a teenager and wishes to attend college, develop her career and be active in her community and church." Good luck.
What is most shocking about this phenomenon is that we're not all that shocked by it. Modesty used to be considered a natural female attribute. No more. Just take a look around next time you're at the mall.

Act like a whore, then get surprised that you aren't treated equally or with respect. Yep, sounds like womens libbers to me.
Next they will call the mods and tell them I'm in a flame war. It takes all kinds.
He has a really neat picture of himself and his dog on his profile page though. :^}
The link in post 125 dealt with the birth rate of teens ages 10-14. How does a 10 years become morally pregnant in 1948 or today?
Bear in mind that even if this is true (and I'd like to see the source), (A) we now have widely available birth control and lots of oral sex which creates more of a disconnect between sexual activity and pregnancy than there once was and (B) it used to be very common for teens, including younger teens, to marry as teenagers and how many of those pregnancies happened within marriage?
But non-regular "working women" comprised a huge percentage of the working and lower-middle classes. Things never were the way they used to be -- the world is constantly changing. Some things are worse, I think a lot more are better.
you left out the FORCED in "practice of [FORCED] nude swimming".
I guess you have never seen the "Stupid Spoiled Whore" episode of "South Park."
Those 19th Century fronteir towns were filled with hookers and gambling, to say nothing of New York as far back as the 18th century. However, what has changed is that such attitudes have moved into the more "respected" family-oriented neighborhoods. This really started in the early 70s.
Your posts do often sound quite defensive.
People used to pretend that illegitimate kids didn't exist. The pregnant girls were sent off to live with another family member when they got pregnant and they would come back after the kid had been given up for adoption.
No, they didn't pretend that they didn't exist. They did treat them as an embarassment, though. To believe that things have always been exactly the same throughout human history is the believe that human behavior is impervious to cultural and incentives and that we are simply creatures of instinct that will do what we are going to do regardless of the consquences. Is that what you really believe?
Because there are parents who actually allow it and they are just trying to make a buck.
The school district we live in has a very strict dress code when it comes to length of skirts and shorts, no midriff bearing shirts, no tank tops, no legging pants unless worn under shorts or a skirt..........and it is enfoced from kindergarten through HS.
Summer time play clothes are one thing, but for going to school or out with mommy and daddy - she is properly attired.
But you're right - I don't understand what some of these parents are thinking.
I think the typical guy would be disgusted if he found out his wife had appeared in GGW during her wild college days, even if he was the type of guy that used to watch GGW.
Hypocritical? Yes, but true nonetheless.
Irrelevant. I said not getting pregnant (today) is not a sign of morality (think oral sodomy, birth control, etc.). That is, showing that 10 y'olds are having fewer babies today than in 1948 does not prove that they are behaving more morally.
Many girls would get married at 14 years of age, until relatively recently in our history.
I agree some are better and some are worse.
I'm at a loss for some of the better things right now however. I'm sure there are some. Maybe you can tell me a few.
On the other hand, I think that more people then took the commandment to "honor thy father and mother" more seriously than they do now. In fact, when I ask lots of kids what that means to them, most don't really seem to have a handle on it.
That's just my memory and I don't pretend to know what people in society were thinking, then or now.
And there are tunnels between the rectories and convents. The babies born to the nuns are buried in the basement.
True, but don't forget, they were approaching middle age in many cases.
Care to prove that assertion? Because, after all, you just insulted the grandmothers and great-grandmothers of practically everyone here.
I don't know. Civil Rights? Electric light? Fresh non-concentrated orange juice?
I will agree that birth control must be factored in- a girl faces a lesser chance of pregnancy from a sexual encounter than she did in 1955. But it still means that there were girls even in their early teens having sex. I posted that link, which was a news report about girls 10-14, below the age where say high school sweethearts would get married and have kids.
