Washington (AP) - A Pentagon Police officer died Monday from injuries he received last month when he was run down by a carjacker.

Officer James Feltis, 41, a 12-year veteran of the force, had been at INOVA Fairfax Hospital and had not regained consciousness since Jan. 11, when he was hit while trying to stop the speeding vehicle. The suspect was driving the wrong way on a one-way street while trying to elude Alexandria, Va., police.

Feltis was hit while standing in front of the car. He was thrown into the air and came down on the back of the car, then hit the ground, said Pentagon Police Chief Richard Keevill.

Alexandria Police Lt. John Crawford said the suspect was moving at a "pretty good clip" when he hit the officer.

Feltis was awarded the office of the Secretary of Defense Medal of Valor on Feb. 8., in a bedside ceremony attended by his wife.

The suspect in the case, Ossie Larode, 22, is under indictment on charges including carjacking and attempted murder.

Larode is accused of ordering a 65-year-old Maryland man out of his 2002 Cadillac on the fringes of Old Town, Alexandria.

Police later found the car and chased it into Arlington County, then north onto Interstate 395. The suspect exited at the Pentagon, where Feltis was hit, but kept driving until an Alexandria Police car rammed the Cadillac a short distance away.

"When the state police, Pentagon Police and Alexandria Police attempted to arrest him, there was a scuffle, and the suspect got possession of the Alexandria officer's gun," said Amy Bertsch, an Alexandria Police spokeswoman. Larode fired several shots and injured himself, Bertsch said.

The man who was carjacked was not seriously hurt.

Is this a 'pull the plug' incident?

That's exactly what I thought when i read this.

The idiots out here calling into talk shows are saying the officer should have "just stepped out of the way of the car" instead of shooting the car thief.

My questions to those Bozos is "what didn't the Pentagon cop just step out of the way"

IDOITS!!!

From various sources:

Incident Details
Cause of Death: Vehicular assault
Date of Incident: Tuesday, January 11, 2005
Incident Location: Virginia
Weapon Used: Automobile
Suspect Info: Apprehended

Officer James Feltis was run over on Jan. 11th when he tried to stop a carjacked car as it sped the wrong way on an exit ramp toward the Pentagon.

Alexandria police said the Cadillac had been carjacked near Old Town, and when they spotted it they chased it onto Interstate 395, then onto a Pentagon exit ramp the wrong way. Officer Feltis, who was unaware of the pursuit, stepped out of a control booth at the bottom of the exit ramp to motion the vehicle to stop. The driver of the vehicle instead sped up and struck Officer Feltis head-on, then kept going until an Alexandria officer rammed the vehicle a short distance at the top of the exit ramp on Route 27.

The suspect began to struggle with the pursuing Alexandria officers and was able to obtain one of their weapons. The weapon discharged, striking the suspect in the leg. The twenty-two-year-old man who was allegedly driving the car remains in the custody of U.S. Marshals and is due in federal court Friday to face carjacking and attempted murder charges. A spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office won't say whether the charges will now be upgraded to murder..

Defense Department officials say Officer Feltis never regained consciousness. Last Tuesday, Feltis was awarded a Medal of Valor in a bedside ceremony. He was 41 years old and had spent 12 years on the Pentagon force. Officer Feltis is survived by his wife and daughter.

Thank you for posting the article you did. The original one announcing his death makes him sound like an idiot who tried to pull a Superman or something. Nothing is further from the truth.

I know they won't fry the @55hole who did it, but I hope they at least toss away the key.

Excerpts from the Wash Post story:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A24448-2005Feb14.html

Injured Pentagon Police Officer Dies

"A speeding car headed the wrong way peeled into the Pentagon's south parking lot early one morning last month, and Pentagon police officer James M. Feltis did what he always did: He tried to stop the driver and offer help.

The driver, fleeing Alexandria police in a suspected carjacking, did not slow, police said. Instead, he slammed into Feltis, then crashed the vehicle into a guardrail.

… Last month, colleagues told The Washington Post that Feltis was a reliable, attentive officer who regularly spotted and assisted drivers who found themselves lost in the Pentagon's massive parking lot.

That's probably what Feltis, 41, thought he was dealing with Jan. 11 when he saw a black Cadillac race the wrong direction down a one-way street on Pentagon property, then head toward the traffic booth he was manning, Pentagon Police Chief Richard S. Keevill said last month.

"A lot of time, people get lost [in the parking lot], and he sets them in the right direction. He always pays attention," said Lt. Zelma Owens, who supervised Feltis for 10 years.

… Authorities said the driver of the car had stolen the vehicle from a McDonald's restaurant in Alexandria after striking its owner, a 65-year-old Maryland man.

He then led Alexandria and Fairfax County police and Virginia state troopers on a high-speed chase on Interstate 395 to the Pentagon, where he plowed into Feltis and crashed the Cadillac before being wrestled down by law enforcement officers.

... Feltis suffered a massive head wound, internal bleeding and a fractured leg from the blow."

A policeman was killed by someone driving a stolen car? Imagine that? I wonder if the Los Angeles city council and LAPD knows about this?

I never dreamed it would be me,
my name for all eternity.
Recorded at some hallowed place,
alas, my name, no more my face.
"In the line of duty" I hear them say.
My family now has the price to pay.
My folded flag stained with their tears,
we only had a few short years.
The badge no longer on my chest,
I sleep now, in eternal rest.
My sword I pass to those behind,
I pray they keep this thought in mind.
I never thought it would be me,
with heavy heart upon bended knee,
I ask for all here from the past...
Please dear God, let my name be last.

Rest in Peace Officer Felton, we have the watch. Gone But Not Forgotten.

Not my work, which I should have mentioned. I'm not sure where that originated.
