Scandal Puts Focus On Role of Bloggers (WaPo on FR, NCPAC and MD4Bush)
Washington Post ^ | 02/11/05 | David Snyder and Matthew Mosk

Posted on 02/10/2005 10:41:44 PM PST by conservative in nyc

The Web site began as a sort of Internet boutique for like-minded conservatives and libertarians, suspicious of federal power and angry at President Bill Clinton.

Started in 1997 by a reclusive California conservative, freerepublic.com saw its membership blossom with Clinton's impeachment and the election of George W. Bush. Attention to the site reached a zenith last fall, when a "freeper" -- the group's moniker for its bloggers -- first discussed flaws in documents CBS News used in a report critical of Bush's National Guard service.

---Snip---

One participant working under the handle MD4BUSH, whose identity is unknown, drew Steffen into a private conversation and appeared to coax him to share more details about his role in spreading the rumor. Copies of those chat room e-mails were later provided to The Washington Post.

The Oct. 18 conversation began with MD4BUSH complimenting Steffen and saying how obvious it was that the rumors about the mayor were true. Steffen, writing under the name NCPAC, replied:

"I don't look for the MO'M [O'Malley] story to hit for a little bit yet. . . . However, a lot of what everyone knows about MO'M is because of work that has occurred. It's been a wild ride."

MD4BUSH later probed further:

"Your saying that my dentist knows [about the rumors] because of work you did? Wow, I must say, I'm impressed. I mean really, everyone knows -- how did that happen?"

Yeah, his "Ha-ha...BUSTED!" exit strategy. I think he got what he wanted, and probably won't be back for a while.

Bill,

What if Jim can tell that it is a Washington Post email address? Just a thought.

If his IP is traced back to the Washington Compost, he's really as stupid as well... a left-wing Compost reporter.

I have restored all so this entire mess can be exposed to the light of day. ... I think MD4Bush has some splainin' to do. Also think this story is far from over.

Glad to see that. I hope NCPAC will consider his legal options. At the minimum, he was a victim of betrayal. But he may also be the victim of a crime and he may want to pursue justice in this case. Hope you got log files on the messages.

FR for me has always been 90% reading/learning and 10% posting/teaching anyway. The first post upon signing up is a dead giveaway for a troll IMO.

Double affair laid bare: Kerik cheated on wife with Judith Regan and correction officer ^

Amazing that they could take Kerick down sooooo easily-- yet O'Malley still roams unscathed. Should send a note to Kerick, Baltimore is looking for a Police commissioner, it doesn’t matter if you cheat on your wife.

Last post before he posted the freepmail on three different unrelated threads on 2/8....he is no innocent little poster.

Not always, sometimes they start off real syrupy in the beginning and than blow up on one thread. There are a few on here who I am still waiting for to pop and they have been on for a while now.

Big deal-- some poster is fool enough to reveal his stupidity and a WaPo plant thinks "exposing" it means something.

The average reader of the WaPo, like the average poster on FR, doesn't give a rat's @$$ about this story or the Gannon story, either.

Hey, WaPo, we'll let you know, again, when a real scandal breaks....

What if he was using his own laptop but while he was at work -- wireless connection. What IP would show up -- the work IP (eg. Media) or his own?

True, like Gannon the media is trying to create a scandal where none exists
