Anti-abortion, anti-gay marriage, anti-Communist, why wouldn't the liberals of the MSM want to see Pope John Paul II replaced with someone hopefully more in tune with their modern mores?
And thus it was that, of all the angles that The Today Show could have adopted with regard to the Popes' illness and infirmity, it chose to focus squarely on the possibility (read 'hope'?) that he might resign.
That was how the show-opening tease framed the issue, and it was the gist of the interview with the handsome, young, articulate American priest Thomas Williams, live from Rome, with whom Katie spoke.
In fairness to Katie, she did have kind words about the Pope's inspirational courage in the face of his physical challenges. But other than that, everything focused on the possibility he might resign (though again, in fairness, there was no discussion of the sort of person who might ultimately replace him).
Father Williams didn't dodge the issue: he acknowledged that canon law does contemplate the possibility of a papal resignation, though as he pointed out more than once, this has not happened voluntarily in over 700 years.
Katie had him confirm that there are rules calling for the involuntary removal of a pope who has lost his mental faculties, but as Father Williams pointed out, the Parkinson's that afflicts the Pope leaves him physically infirm but mentally intact.
Obviously the Pope's condition, and the possibility that he might pass from the scene, are newsworthy, but the prospect of a premature replacement by resignation seems more to reflect Today's wish for a different, more liberal Pope, than the reality of anything the Pope himself has said. To the contrary, all indications are that he intends to serve till the very end.
On a related note, Katie had a warm 'n fuzzy interview with the doctor who attended to the world's smallest newborn, a twin born no larger than a cell phone. Katie breathily asked whether the baby's survival was a "miracle." Couric seemed oblivious to the irony that in another context, Katie would be "celebrating a women's right to choose" to end the life of that "miracle."

Next thing we'll hear is that a Newsweak poll was taken and 75% want the Pope to resign.
I heartily pray that they will be sorely disappointed.
Wouldn't surprise me! The liberal media effectively treat the Pope as just another politician. I've noticed that in particular at the time of papal visits to the US. Church representatives will invariably be asked questions along the lines "59% of Catholics favor a relaxation of rules on contraception and abortion. Isn't the church going to have to change to stay relevant?"
The media see the church in political terms rather than understanding the church's view of itself as the defender of eternal, immutable truths.
The Church, and the Pope especially, are probably the most slandered, spun, and maligned subjects in the media's repertoire.
All babies are miracles, but Katie supports women who would "choose" to kill them.
The MSM has been on a 'Pope Death Watch' for two weeks. Rather unseemly. (Pardon the pun.)

...or a good, traditional, conservative candidate such as Arnize or Hoyos.
Katie's seamless transition from maudlin cooing over the miracle of a baby's birth to "you go girl!" cheerleader for abortion is breathtaking. Doesn't she see the irony, the hypocrisy?
Since 1996 the leftist CINOs have been predicting his demise. Some of his detractors have long since died or become irrelevant.
Once again, GLGB, thank you for your humble service, Watching the Today Show so we won't have to. How much you want to bet that on the day the Pope dies, Katie will wear red?
