SUTTER CREEK, Calif. - An early morning fire at brand new apartment complex may be the work of radical environmentalists who also claimed responsibility for several recent Northern California arsons, officials said Monday.
The fire at the 128-unit Pinewoods apartment complex broke out around 3 a.m., Sutter Creek Chief of Police Robert Duke said Monday. Only two of the apartments were occupied, and a fire suppression system helped keep the damage confined, he said. Sutter Creek is in Amador County, about 45 miles east of Sacramento.
"There were seven individual fires and some kind of incendiary device with very, very crude triggering mechanisms," Duke said. Graffiti that said "We will win - ELF," was found near the fire, he said.
An FBI-led task force is investigating whether a string of recent fires are the work of a radical environmental group called the Earth Liberation Front, or ELF. The first of those fires was in December at three homes under construction in a Lincoln housing development. Less than a month later, five firebomb-type devices were found by a construction crew working at an Auburn office building.
ELF claimed responsibility for the firebombs at those two sites in letters to local newspapers.
Duke said the task force is investigating whether the Sutter Creek fire was related to the earlier blazes.
The FBI says the Earth Liberation Front has caused more than $100 million in damage since 1996, including an arson at a five-story condominium under construction in San Diego in August 2003 that caused $50 million in damages.
The Sutter Creek apartments were built by the Jackson Rancheria band of Miwok Indians, Duke said. Four of the 128 apartments suffered direct fire damage, he said, and three others were damaged by fires set in corridors. About a third of the apartments in the complex sustained smoke damage.
Not only are the home prices in the Gerbil/Pipe Republic of Kalifornia burning up, but the apartments too?
If true- sell their homes and everything they own to pay for the damage and restitution to the victims.
Every ELF member should be sent to Gitmo immediately.
Only in California can we see radical environmentalists set fires that release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere complain about global warming. Morons.
They do it, because they hate people (except themselves), they are "at one with the animals," and all of that.
...saw a news report a few years ago, that PETA (much related to environmentalism) roasted a tofu-and-peanut-butter-stuffed manequin over a fire in a store window.
LOL! You took the words right out of my mouth!
Why would any modern construction site in the US not have a good security system? Armed guards, sensors, infa red cameras etc? Preferably armed guards with .308's with night scopes.
As Michael Savage would say "The Enemy Within"
You rang? My .308cal Class III AR-10s silencers, full-auto are ready and waiting for a call from the FBI. Leupold Glass and laser round it out, nicely. I routinely shoot 9-10x rings at 900yds.
"Have Gun, Will Travel"
Declare the group terrorist, sieze its assets and those who support it, incarcerate its members at gitmo.
This plan works for Alqaeda why not ELF ?
At least Al-Qaeda can use guns. These are just a bunch of panty-waist-nerdy-preppy-eco-hippies.
Notice the pattern... first Lincoln, then Auburn, now Sutter Creek? Whoever it is, they keep movin south, little by little, right down through our Gold Country.
What year did she graduate? I did time at Amador High, which used to be Sutter Creek High:)
60? 61? Something like that.
I graduated in 59 so I am sure I knew her if she graduated in 60 or 61. What a small world.
These people are arsonists, doesn't matter why or what excuse they use. Arson is a felony with long prison sentences. Try them, convict them and put them in prison.
The complex was developed by native americans. Imagine that,,
