I was watching tv an hour ago and came across the local NEA propaganda channel. The subject of the program was the use of "computers in the classroom." The instructor was standing in front of the class, telling them they were going to do a project comparing the injustices that Ghandi and Susan B. Anthony suffered. Kids were put into groups to do "research" on the computer and then they were instructed to cut out pictures and make posters to demonstrate this. These kids were not third and fourth grade students. They were high school students.
I'm just starting to see a pattern with some freepers who claim to be teachers. This latest one, Smartaleck, states the subject of homosexuality should be mentioned in an age appropriate school setting, yet they refuse to provide that age range.
They even went so far as to deny making that statement, and when I made it crystal clear in post 194, they never responded. Perhaps some freepers who are teachers are the very ones pushing homosexuality on school children.
Typical liberal response...

That was my question but some would rather homeschool and the rest is somebody elses problem even though their paying for the system.
Some say it's too corrupt and just gave up.

Same here. People are broad brushing the whole system for the few that are bad.
I see the same thng with the anti-war people. Actually, I did not write that. My brothers and sisters and I (except one still in a public high school) all graduated from public schools and are doing just fine. We are living up to the strong Christian values that my grandfathers (one, a former state teachers' union president--egads!!!!) and parents taught us. Oh the horror....

Errr, it was about the ability of new employees to write and speak well, not ethics.
I would also point out that just because there are some in business who aren't the paragon of ethics doesn't mean they all are bad anymore than to say all teachers and schools are bad. :-)
Your last statement was the point I was trying to make.
Which, makes the idea that "some people have"...that they can insulate their children from society if they homeschool a silly one.
At some point those kids have to go out into society and confront the kids that were educated by a system they deplore. Schools are a microcosm of society. People curse, they talk about sex, there are perverts, there are homosexuals and others that aren't perceived as the best of society.
Like it or not schools have to deal with those issues. If people don't like the way a school is dealing with it change it.
Do I get a bingo prize or something? I would like to point out that even in such a "terrible" place, I met many good people and had wonderful experiences. Because of my values, I could talk to the stoners, but I didn't need to join in their behavior. Yes, my brothers and sisters and I (all 8 of us), products of that terrible system have not ever smoked or drank, have never had s-- outside of marriage, have never used drugs, have never divorced (not that that's disobeying a law), have strived to have strong families, are active churchgoers, put education as paramount in importance (though the big guy upstairs is given the most time), all work hard, respect our mother and father, etc. etc. The horror of it all.

Nothing wrong with homeschooling. It's homeschooling and then not participating in the public school system which is taking their money to, in some cases, use it for a flawed system.
Sitting at home on FR bitc*ing about doesn't solve the problems. Hence, I'll hide my kid at home, you take my tax money and spend it anyway you want and I'll complain to people who can do nothing about it. LOL
Actually, you should add that some of the ed-libs want to take MY tax money so they can use it as welfare to subsidize their kids' private education (even if they can already afford it). Even some homeschoolers are getting into the act, feeling that they are "entitled" to the funds because of their extra time spent (I thought that was a part of raising kids). I wonder if I should get on the bandwagon and ask the government to reimburse me for the 1000's of hours outside the classroom that I spend for my job. Maybe a lot of people in other jobs could do the same. Maybe I could get reimbursed for helping that little old lady across the street when I was a boy scout or that time I volunteered at the homeless shelter.
Why is that an issue for homeschoolers? Parents are responsible for the education of their own children, not the education of all children.
I work long hours so my wife doesn't have to work. We gave up an entire second income so we can homeschool. We sacrifice in many ways others take for granted.
My wife attends seminars, purchases and pours over books on raising leaders. She creates a custom tailored education for each child. We've purchased and read the following books:
The Well Trained Mind
The Well Educated Mind
The Underground History of American Education
A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-First Century

In all this, some freepers who are teachers think homeschoolers should take the time to try and correct what's wrong with public schools. Why? We are busying providing an education for our children our detractors can't provide. We are sacrificing years of our lives to give the best we can for our children, our legacy.
Apparently to some folks, homeschoolers still aren't sacrificing enough. Apparently to some folks, homeschoolers need to give more of their time, more of their life so other parents who don't care as much, who haven't sacrificed as much, can continue sitting on their butts and let others fight their battles for them. Get off your butts and get involved yourself.
These freepers who are teachers that say homeschoolers should try and correct the problems with public schools should shut up and remove the log from their own eye.

I guess so. Yes, except for all my cousins and their kids (which include dozens of Eagle scouts--including all 6 boys in our family). No, we haven't gone to Harvard or Yale, but I think we are all trying to live up to my mom's greatest desire--to see all of her kids turn out "good."
BTW, I am not a member of a teacher's union, but I do know many good teachers who are.

Kids shouldn't have to confront or be faced with a lot of things. Unfortunatly the real world isn't like that.
Other kids will curse, offer them drugs, assault, engage in all kinds of sexual manner of behavior etc.
It would be great if every parent could babysit them 24/7 but barring that what to do?
